The Sliding top wouldn't go back very far.....

That was about it. It wouldn't open any further.

So today I took some time to look into why it wouldn't open. In the process I learned how the mechanism works.

The top slides back into a pocket like frame....

Remove the two screws you see, there's two more on the other side....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The Pin slides out and the spring keeps it in place nice and tight....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This pin system pivots so when the top is almost closed it rides up on a cam that raises the back of the top, bringing it level with the roof. Simple!

With those simple steps the sunroof is out. The cover that the headliner is glued to slides under the top. By removing the philips screws around the trim pieces you see the cables will come out and you can remove the head liner tray. This is what was keeping the top from opening all the way. The top was hitting the tray.

The tray out of the car....

Now it's just removing and cleaning everything so I can put it back together.
Here's what all the parts look like taken apart....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Thats the crank, all it does is moves the cables in opposite directions. One tooth off and the top will bind when opened. All the guides are plastic and mine will be replaced at some point. I was very careful removing them as not to damage them. I cleaned all the rust off and greased the plastic channels so it would slide nice and free.

The guides on the sides are aluminum.

So now the top opens all the way.....

So that is it, very simple. All the parts need to be greased a bit to help against rusting as you saw. If you need any of those plastic parts they are reproduced and can be picked up at several VW suppliers.

Make sure your drain holes are cleared so that water will drain through the tubes and out when it rains.

Yeah, I failed to mention that I washed the drains out. Be careful if you stick anything down the drains to clean them. My car is apart and the hoses look dry/hard. They may break if you get rough with them. Having an open drain will keep the rain off ya!

Great info.

I just had a sunroof clip cut into my '65 before paint. I need to add the drain tubes still.

L360, Sea Blue.

Very funny color depending on the lighting.

Actually darker than it looks but the flash lit it up Smile

Thanks!

Looks like original color of your car.

You might want to check around, the later cars have metal tubes that will replace those small plastic guides for your cables. My 64 had the same thing and they fit mine. Also the later cars have a metal plate that replaces that small clip that holds your cables to your gear. The best I can tell parts off of later bugs and flat windshield supers will interchange. The Bentley Manual has a real good section on adjustments, also West coast metric sells a manual them too.(which looks like a photo copy of whats in the Bentley) But it looks your the right track, good luck!

I've got new seals/felt to install on my Sunroof, what type of contact cement would be best to use? Would the yellow 3M weatherstripping glue work? I have some contact cement made by Dap but I'm worried that the heat will make it soft and the felt will slip out.

Also I know the foam/rubber seal goes on the slider part of the Sunroof but does it go towards the rear of the lip or the front?

The PO took all the guts out of the sun roof in my 66. I dunno why but I've found many things that point to him being a complete dumbass. No seals no crank no cable nothing but the metal roof its self that I have held up with a water bottle I shoved in the hole. Gotta love POs!

Nice Greg. Have you installed the felt and seal yet. I can't seem to figure out where the rear seal goes looks like it is against the raised part of the top. That car is sweet, I'm in the process of trading my '66 but was thinking about grafting a Sunroof. Well he's going to a good home and I'm getting a patina-ed '64. See my avatar.

DarrelgoolsbyVW, I have one thing to sat to that, you are so right. I'd go to some swap meets and see if you can score the parts. I was missing a few things from my sunroof and a good friend about 125mls from me went to his personal junk yard and sent me the parts. Personal junk yard he buys up whole cars and keeps them out of the crusher. I owe him a Hotdog and Beer at the next show we are at together! Really nice guy. I can put you in touch with him if you need the guides, cables and any other stuff for your sunroof. I'm sure he's on here, LMK.

Just noticed you are in Tn, he is in Ellijay not far south of ya.

rpm750 - Funny you ask, I unpacked it and laid it out just before I logged in here. I was going to look for pics for that very seal Cool

Everything is cleaned and installed except the panel. Need to glue the seals.

Sure moves easier with the clean and greased cables Laughing
