Not to change the "tune" on this thread but I had to smile when I viewed the question on how folks knew the original engine number in their bus.
Let me tell a short "sea story" here. When I retired from the Navy
(I served 30 years) in '87 , I spent the next 7 years as
a flight line mech in a civil service aircraft crew in Washington state. During that time I went through five busses before getting the one I currently own in 1995. Every time I got another bus I'd write to VW for a birth certificate and each time they sent one it would be signed by a woman named Steffi Grundel.
I never had the pleasure of meeting Steffi Grundel but one or two of those "certificates" had the the faint smell of her perfume.
The scent of a woman I guess you could say.
I've always had this image of her in my mind, based on that faint smell
of her on the papers she sent. Marlena Detrich ?? perhaps.
Blonde hair? Blue eye's?
Darn shame Volkswagen doesn't handle those certificates anymore. |

Going back to the engines, I have a late (1500?) case with no numbers. Dealership replacement? Anybody knows what the story might have been with that one? |
Probably dealer replacement. My 1500 Bus has this engine. It has the recycle symbol on the case and I have the dealer engine replacement booklet for it. _________________ How to Post Photos

I'm darn certain that my '65 didn't come with it's original engine. I am curious though, according to the list on this site, I'm supposed to have case numbered between 0 849 832~ 0 883 946 for the 1500 OR 9 389 000~ 9 284 780 (these numbers seem out of sequence, but that's what the list says). I thought that all '65's had 1500s but it would seem that there was a choice. If that's the case (ha), then how do I know which engine mine came with? My bus's build date is Jan. 28th of '65. I was told and shown numbers that a lot of Euro busses (in '65) still had 1200's in them. My German delivery came with a 40 horse. |

All,
I've tried looking up the VIN on my engine for my '65 bus everywhere you guys say to look...no luck. Tell me what you think. VIN is 5170997.
Thanks,

Hi Craig,
going off the numbers you gave I think it is somewhere between June to December 1960. But please dont quote me on it.
What does anyone else think?
Cheers

If any one is looking for a 1st generation bastard motor I happen to have one. well almost one. This is an original bastard case, crank, bearings, flywheel and a new rear seal. The crank has the main at the #2 race. This was the infamous motors that they recalled. it was in running condition when disassembled. I have built a true 3rd generation bastard and this is what I have left over. PM me if interested.
here is a link with some pics of the motor i have....

Well, that was the engine that was in it when I bought it. Ran well so I'll worry about the "matching numbers" when it dies. How did you figure Oct '60? I looked at the same chart and the only number that matched was the 5. OH, I GET IT!! Those numbers represent the top end of the series for the month, right? I'm such a bonehead!
Let me ask you this then....How can I figure out which carburetor should be on this engine?
Thanks |

Hi 23 window collection,
The june 63 bus you have, is it a 23 window?

cheers

Yes, that particular bus is indeed a 23 window, which I am assembling for a very particular customer. What day was yours produced? |

Apparently as per the chart in the techincal section, the 1500 was still an M coded option in 65. Prehaps in europe all 65's were standard with a 40 horse as mentioned by BarryL, US spec buses had 1500. Check your M-codes for 216. |

Photo's below are a few engines I would trade or sell out right for the correct engines for the following bus production dates:
6 21 1961 an engine between 5 849 650 and 5 938 194
9 15 1960 an engine between 5 073 407 and 5 157 563
4 10 1962 an engine between 6 642 050 and 6 726 000
April 1955 an engine between 20-1023 849 and 20-1049 452
Correct for Feb 1962
Correct for June 1960
Correct for Feb 1961

According to the birth certificate its built on the 5th june 63 and left on the 6th june 63, not sure how accurate it is because it is a CKD(Completely knocked-down) bus. So it was assembled here in Australia.

Hi 23 Window
Would the June 1960 motor only be correct for a bug as it looks like a 36hp motor or am I missing something? Factory manual says from June 1st 1960 all motors were 40hp in buses. I am after a June 1960 40hp motor though- Would be good if I cound find it in Aus!!
Cheers

As I was searching through the list, the Mcode 216 ended around October and from there I believe it was just an option... for Europe only? _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy"- Ben
