Probably dealer replacement. My 1500 Bus has this engine. It has the recycle symbol on the case and I have the dealer engine replacement booklet for it. |
I recently found one of these as well, however no recycle stamp on mine. Just a blank case. Pictures to follow. |

Hi 23 Window
Would the June 1960 motor only be correct for a bug as it looks like a 36hp motor or am I missing something? Factory manual says from June 1st 1960 all motors were 40hp in buses. I am after a June 1960 40hp motor though- Would be good if I cound find it in Aus!!
Cheers

Good day Nicko, I have seen this same break down for June of 60 as the start of 40hp in buses. However, according to Progessive refinements, the techincal section on this site the 36 hp continues thru to August. Definitely difficult to determine unless we can find several 60 May June July August bus owners with original engines to clarify the written data. |

Hmm..
After looking up the codes on the above engines, I looked to see what the engine code should be for my DC.. My M-code plate dates my DC as built in Nov. '63, but according to my Vin#1197994 it was built in October. If I wanted to find a 'correct' coded case, which should I look for, October or November? _________________ "My ex-wife had a hint of a beard and she looked like a manly-girl... that made no difference..."

It shows November on this site. Remember the #'s shown in the VIN Tech. are for the last # of the month, not the first. |

Looking for a late Dec 66 (ending H0 309 830), early Jan 67 case (ending H0 707 628). My bus was built Dec. 28th 66. The only odd thing I noticed is that from the end of Dec to the end of Jan the HO case numbers span 400,000 give or take, well above any other month to month average???. _________________

1/1958
2/1956
sitting in long beach collecting dust show me you have the vw to match em
if you want em
2/1960 3603727 now looks like this, I built it for my 2/1960 bus before I knew what a bastard motor was.
Bastard info.
started with
May 1959 Chassis # 469560 Engine # 3400000
ended with
May 1960 Chassis # 614455 Engine # 3491699
53,250 missing blocks if this information is correct. _________________ Los Angeles Bastard |

Thanks L.A.B., this is exactly what this thread is all about. Ok guys, here's a great opportunity, if you have one of the buses matching the above engines, it does not get any easier then this.

I have two 36HP engines-
1) 2570745 supposedly sept '58 and from a Type II. Mostly complete exc. muffler and air cleaner.
2) 2328954 also supposedly mar '58 from an unk veh. Longblock with some ancillary parts.
Both need a rebuild. I also have about 4 or 5 40hp lngblocks and separate parts laying around. If you are interested I can get the #s. These are free. I can even help with delivery around Central CA. I hate to throw anything away.
*EDIT* I had the #'s switched. & wrong _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon
