i have a bay doublecab with a canopy that is more similar to vanagon style, therefore i thought it would be best to post my question here. i have to replace nearly all of the thirty or so 12mm rivets that fasten leather latches to the vinyl. below is the canopy, the rivet, plus an additional shot of the inside of the rivet.
can someone identify the maker of this canopy?
does anybody know where i can get original-like rivets painted green the way they came from the manufacturer?
i would also like to know how folks remove the existing rivets that need change out.
advance appreciation and thanks, stevo _________________ When you cross an Irishman, they never forget. I mean, never. |

true that they look brass. tom sent this image to me a few weeks ago of a vanagon canopy, looks close.
also, it'd be helpful if i knew the name of this type of rivet.

Depending on where you're located, I'd check with boat canvas shops. I've worked in a couple and they all dealt with hardware of that sort. So a shop might have catalogs that you could find a similar rivet.
To get them out I've used heavy side cutter type pliers with success, but it really depends on the material that the rivet is made out of. With aluminum you can just grab the rivet under the head and carefully work your way down to the shaft. You don't want to cut the fabric so patience is key. Your not going to do it with one cut, you'll have to keep squeezing the pliers seperating the male from the female until you are at the shaft. Then you can start to work at cutting the shaft. I've also drilled off the head but sometimes the rivet just spins and you can burn and tear the fabric if your not carefull. _________________ I'm horizontally opposed; what's your problem? |
