I read once that the cornerstone was buried. I am pretty sure Jimmy Hoffa is beneath it.

I believe it was removed during the early 50's.

There is a picture of two or three guys wrestling it on it's side. In he background you can see a beetle that has the small logo production hubcaps on it.

It was printedin hotVW's once and mis-captioned. It stated that the picture was taken before the ceremony, but given the car in the background they were obviously mistaken.

I think I have seen it in some books too.

Does anyone know if the corner stone was actually ever built into the structure of the actual factory?

I was actually serious about the first portion of my comment. I wish I could recall all sources I have seen/read over the years and recall which was found on the internet or in a book.

It seems that it was part of the structure but regardless, after the war people wanted so badly to remove the landscape of any reminders of the evil doing of the Nazi's that people destroyed, buried or hid anything that remained.

There are pill boxes and things still scattered everywhere and in recent years much effort has been put into removing a lot of that stuff as well. I guess they do not find it necessary to keep it for history when no one is likely to forget it.

I thought I read something about the cornerstone eventually being buried sometime after the war....how soon or how late after, I do not recall.

Any cogwheel, DAF or swastika type stuff was a sore reminder and most was cleaned up and disposed of over time.

It´s there....

It´s in a non-public area....

So no worries - all good....

According to a German friend, the corner stone was removed after the war and used as part of a back fil for a bridge support and burried.

It exists, but isn't visible. Probably well preserved too.

Now that would be a find.

Has no one noted that the film has gone a little red due to a not very solid fixer? If you adjust the colors to look more natural both cars are for sure black.

Looks almost blue. perhaps a 'deep grey-blue'? Laughing

There was an auction in Butler, PA where there was a "corner stone" flag for sale. It had the regular Nazi symbol and then the KDF symbol on the flag. It was about 20ftX14ft. It went for $3500, it was a popular item (my brother was at the auction).

I didn't see any of the flags in the VW ceremony with the cog logo.

Any number of ways with the #1 being that a returning GI from WW2 brought it home near Butler. Spoils of war.
