Moderator notes from EverettB:
The original photos below are dead so here is another example of the engine case stampings:
Right side case half, on left side of generator stand:
This stamping is:
3 5 16
indicating
3rd day of 5th month (May), production shift (1), year (6)
so this case half was produced during the 1st shift, May 3rd, 1956
Left side case half, to the left of the oil pump:
This stamping is:
3 5 36
indicating
3rd day of 5th month (May), production shift (3), year (6)
so this case half was production during the 3rd shift, May 3rd, 1956
Overall location of left-side stamp:
Original post is below
==============================

looks like 19 Dec. '52 to me, perhaps a restamped replacement case?
need more pics of the serial number stamping area etc. _________________ There is an idea of a Billmetric; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. As I understand it, it is in the form of day month (shift)year.
19 = day
12 = month
22 = year (2nd shift) 1952
0 = 1950, 1 = 1951, 2 = 1952, 3 = 1953, 4 = 1954, 5 = 1955, etc |

Yes, 1-0268989 IS a jan '51 engine number
The 11 in (28 5 11) is not the 11th production year.
Send pics of the Engine number stamping area on the case when you
can.
Mike

This is my block that I have for sale. I thought it was a 36 hp. What are the differences visually between a 36 hp long block and a 25 hp. The reason I ask is that the numbers stamped on the case identify it as 25 hp but there is also a stamp underneath the numbers that say it has been rebuilt. Just want to make sure I am listing it correctly.
Damn I am ignorant on these older smaller motors. _________________ Getting back in the game |

Here are some pictures I just snapped. The first is the engine number. You can see below it that there is a very faint stamping. I believe that is says factory rebuilt, but the letters between the f and y are really faint. I can't seem to get a non-blurry pic with my POS camera.
The other pics are to help everyone identify whether it is a 25 or 36 hp block.

That block has Jan 1951 serial number but it has 36hp heads and the bottom appears to be 36hp as well. The block could still be 25hp with the cylinders bored out for 36hp pistons and heads. |

I would guess that is a dealer replacement case. Weird serial # stamping, later head studs, drain plug in sump plate instead of case, and so forth.
Original Beetle 1- engine numbers have more dashes.
Example
Since it's a replacement case, how do you tell that is not a 1962 date stamping? _________________ How to Post Photos

It looks like there is a filled-in spot for a drain plug in the case.

So Seeing this case has been cut in multiple areas, And its locked up. The jug holes are opened up. cranks been cut. ect. The possibility of it being useable is very slim. |

What is the casting date on the other half of the case? Should be the same date or within a day. |

I think we're looking at a 1962 crankcase, not 1952. It has the larger, 40hp sump plate and the spacing of the "1-4-3-2" is much closer than earlier blocks, but the lettering does not appear as large as the mid-'60s cases. _________________ Thanks,

62 would have the bolt on generator stand I think. It's possible it is a replacement engine that was made much later in the production. |
