Now that's some sick welding - the way it should be done!

The chassis is about 95% done now, all the way to the inner rockers. I'm trying to decide if there is an advantage to putting the floors in now or after the body is back on.
All of the guide tubes are changed now, thanks to some help from Keith (riffraff)! That was a major pain, but I think it will be worth it when it comes to re-assembly time. Thanks for your help, I would not have been able to do that job alone. That took longer than taking the body off the chassis.
Just the rear tophat, a couple little touch ups, and she's good to go for Friday.

Just some pictures before the body and chassis go back together.
The massive pile of green metal. Keep in mind, the chassis metal is already installed, and there are still a few pieces on the way from KlassicFab.

Basically it comes down to three things.
1. I try not to blast anything. I've tried plastic blasting, and I find the little beads are left everywhere. They always come out of seams and whatnot. I find just stripping the body with 3M discs (the coated wire discs) works great. It takes a bit longer but it works better and adds a bit of tooth to the metal for adhesion on primer.
I've heard mixed results with Soda blasting as well.
2. I like to not have a whole project in bare metal, it should really be primed right away.
3. I'm not sure I could actually move the body at this point. It is literally just hanging of the hoist arms. It's not much more than a roof section with a nose and some doors hung off it. |

Nice work Ken! This is a kick ass build thread. I remember seeing it at your house when I picked up the 23' (we made it back through the pass with it as it started to snow...wheww!) Anyway, You've come a long way man. Keep up the great work

Thanks Anthony!
As hoped this was a very productive weekend. Chris came to help for two days, and Keith lent a hand for a few hours hours on Friday. We got the chassis back under the body, and started connect all the pillars.
Lining everything up took a ton of measurements. I swear we spent more time with measure tapes in our hands than the welder.
The one "good" section of the long side rocker was helpful to get the overall height correct.
The whole rocker will be replaced in the end, but this section was left intact for now to allow it to mate up to the inner rocker on that side.
To get the correct height and alignment in the rear we decided we had to repair the rear engine lid pillars and hang the engine lid. That also meant repair the section below the rear window, as it was badly rotted.
Chris working on the rear pillars.
By Saturday night we rolled her away from the hoist, and back on her own feet... well, sort of.
I finished up the cargo floors today, and got the bulkhead installed.

Thanks guys, all the feedback keeps me going. This is the worst condition bus I've started with, but it's going a long at a good pace. I'm loving the build. I'm looking for a few pieces like a spare tire shelf, and one rear torsion bar and spring plate. I'll do up a want add, so please check it out if you have something for this bus, lets talk.
My goal is to drive it to the Classic/Octo next year. Ambitious, I know, but I think It's possible. My buddy Trevor and I drove to the classic in 08' and had a great time, despite our wheel bearing issues. http://www.clubveedub.ca/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=32329&p=202674

AWESOME WORK...
I am about to dock my rear axle part to the chassis. My bus was so bad so that the part of the chassis with the rear axle stayed put on the ground when I jacked up the bus so I had no really good measuring points for how it was supposed to go back in.
Can I please ask you if the part of the rear frame marked with my arrows is pefectly horizontal? That would help me with the angle in which the rear axle should meet the rest of the frame.
My situation:
