Oh how I wish it were true. Or could it? I have heard rumors that VW made a 1000 or so 4 wheel drive beetles. Any one know for sure? A friend of mine, currently some where in Asia, snapped this photo of an apparent one.
A beautiful specimen none the less. _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” - Edward Abbey

That would be...interesting. But realistically, what good is it? I mean, AWD cars are nice but is this 4WD or more like AWD? I remember hearing that there were 4WD Thing prototypes, so I guess this isn't entirely crazy. _________________ 62 Rag - a little crusty |

Sure they were although very rare now or non-existant.
Type 86: All-wheel drive prototype (only 6 fabricated)
Type 87: 'Kommandeurwagen' Type 86 4x4 Kübelwagen chassis with Beetle command car body.
Type 98: 4x4 Kübelwagen-chassis with a Beetle body
Type 128 and 166 Schwimmwagen is the most numerous mass-produced amphibious car in history.
There may be others... _________________ Bobby

It's off a Willys. _________________ If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Hill Climber
Why do you need 4WD...ever driven in deep snow, rutted muddy forest roads, did I say one of the wheels off the ground and no wheel pulling or pushing. I like my VW's but my 4WD positrac truck goes quite well in deep snow. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Yes a bug is great in the snow, but my Subaru (AWD) is much better. I have some VW history books with the WWII 4WD VWs, but I don't know how they did it. Anyone have any links for the details? Just curious. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Keep in mind, my friend took this photo while in either Pakistan or India. I have not been able to contact her yet to get more details. Though I think someone was just joking around and slapped it on there but could be wrong. If it were true, I would go buy it and bring it home, even though the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car. _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. By the look of it, this is a mid seventies vintage. _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” - Edward Abbey

I have a book that describes a bit how it was done in the WWII vintage vehicles, I'll have to check it later to see exactly how it was done. _________________ My '72 Super |

Some vanagons had 4x4, right? seems like it'd be pretty bitchin to have a 4wd beetle for that awd grip. But the question is, does it have a diff in the transfer case? _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

It should be '73, because it has bumper brackets, not shocks, and large taillights. |
