I was wondering if anyone can comment on the adhesion strength (the stickynisity) of the tape. Has anyone had issues with this coming off in hot climates? |
It's still thoroughly stuck to all the places I put it, with one exception: vinyl. I put some on the upper bed extension (which is covered in vinyl) and the tape started peeling up leaving a nice, hearty gooey mess. Other than that, the tape is still holding strong on the metal and plastic parts. _________________ ~Kamz

So on vinyl the STICKYNISITY isn't sticky is it. _________________ Tim Potts

On the stickynisity scale , I'd give it a 4 (out of 10) overall for vinyl. It stuck really well initially (started as an 8 ), but then the heat took its toll (dropping to a low of about 2). _________________ ~Kamz

Question for those that have used this tape on the sliding door Did to you apply some heat to get the tape to stick?. like with a heat gun?
Thanks, Mark _________________ Mark

Mine is still rolled up......
Actually, the stickiness depends. It depends because the stuff does not come from just one place. Also, you do not know how old the stuff is, unless it is mil spec dated or something.
Later I may take a bit of my 50 foot roll and test. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Nope; it sticks quite well straight off the roll (on a clean surface, that is). _________________ ~Kamz

Thanks. The prep work is done - rust treatment and cleaning. I'll do the tape after we return from Portland Friday afternoon. Mark _________________ Mark

I did this mod on the sliding door last night.
Amazing!
It is so incredibly quiet and butter smooth.
I've probably opened and closed my slider 30 times now and I laugh every time.
I cleaned all tracks with brake cleaner, sanded and painted the rear lower spine track, and warmed the tape next to the wood stove in my shop to make it a bit easier to apply. And it seemed to stick very well.
I love the fact that the slider tracks are now grease-less too.
Well worth the time and effort. _________________ 86 Syncro|EJ253|Carat |

This is on my to-do list for the winter. My sliding door is LOUD. I have the tape, I just need the time.
These new GoWesty videos are great for understanding the slider door mechanism before you start the project:

The GW videos are pretty good. Skip the part where they say to apply grease, it will definitely attract dirt and grit over time.
The UHMW is a better solution. |

I ordered from Amazon, Paul.
1" x 18yds roll
I trimmed the width by 1/8" in a few spots to fit it the way I wanted.
UHMW tape is kinda like sound deadening, once you apply it to something and notice the difference you wanna put it on everything. _________________ 86 Syncro|EJ253|Carat |

Is this what you ordered - CS Hyde UHMW Polyethylene Rubber Adhesive Tape, Clear 1 inch x 18 yards? Site: http://www.amazon.com/CS-Hyde-Polyethylene-Rubber-...S0KHTVQ6D0
I really want to do this and need to make sure I get the right product.
Thanks,

I got the exact same stuff and it is incredible!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000REGUE4
Extremely and unforgivingly sticky, so no adjusting after the fact! I even put it in the sliding channel above my door (old style nylon block) and it really helps. No more black grease on fingers from people grabbing up there! _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

I put the UHMW tape on the roller rail last fall and it was great until the hot weather but now it can’t take the pressure of the roller. The plastic got all buckled and made the door slide harshly. Took it apart and its a damned lot of work to remove the tape and adhesive. DON’T put the UHMW tape under the roller! Works great against the sidewall though. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit |

I put the UHMW tape on the bottom of the roller path and it made zero difference to the sound of the slider. Yes, I've already greased everything and added butyl mat to the slider and its cover but... _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

I recently discovered that the tape i applied to the covered slider has worn away in spots and detaching in other places. I spent the time with solvent and took the remains off.
Back to the drawing board for me, thinking of a roller mod to quieten the slider noise.
