You are missing one piece ot tin on the left side next to the distributor.
And where is the thermostat linkage? _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

It iwill be a cold blooded engine. It will not warm up fast.
Why people thought that taking out the thermostats will help the engine run cooler, I will never now. It takes no horsepower to run the thermostat.

I don't think they thought it would make it run cooler, I think many of them thought that it was a cause for overheating if they failed, which is erroneous since they fail in the open position. _________________ 71 Squareback-FI -- 73 Bay (subaru powered)

I have my own motor out at the moment also with a broken flap thermostat.
Last week I enquired about buying a new thermostat and the supplier said they are not needed as a VW workshop bulletin has previously recommended they be removed.
Maybe this is only in Australia since mostly we do not get as cold as USA and Europe?? _________________ John

I want to see that bulletin. I have bulletins going back to 1967. If VW said to take them out, then why did they keep installing them on the assembly line up until almost the end. Some of the last Mexican engines did not have them. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

A more likely explanation is that your supplier just doesn't have one to sell you. It would be refreshing if they would just say that.

"Real" new thermostats are up around $90 each, last I checked.
In going through my stash, every time I find one, I feel I have found a nugget of gold.
Right now though, I am down to 2 good used ones.
I bid $35 ea. on 3 cars at an auction that were complete junk, but they had thermostats in them. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Since you're running carbs, you might want to change that breather assembly or you'll have an oil leak at the end of the fan. That breather was set up to be used with FI, and it doesn't quite work well with carbs. Otherwise it looks real good. Keep up the good work. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
