You early model guys are always the black sheep of the group- sorry. The early models are almost always different, but you know that already. |

Heh. Yah.
But this black sheep is catching up. Just about finished installing the coolant low warning system on my Jetta powered former air cooled.
Ironically, the WBX temp gauge fits in my air cooled cluster. But that's another topic altogether. _________________ 1981 Westy DIY 15º ABA

The "99" relay works on my '81.
Neat!

Hey,
I can't find my Bentley. Which relay is for the wipers? Many thanks! _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” - Edward Abbey

If no one else chimes in....
No Bentley handy. Maybe listen or feel which relay "clicks" when wipers on intermittent setting?
On my '81, it was on the far RH end (passenger side) of relay block. _________________ 1981 Westy DIY 15º ABA

It's Bentley 97.10 if anyone's looking. Looks like it's No. 5, or the fifth one from the left. _________________ '85 Westy |

We know that the number 99 relay is programmable. But I've seen posts that say that 197 is programmable, and some say that it isn't. Anyone have any experience with the 197? I also found one lone post online that referred to a #229 programmable. How about this one?

No luck. Installed the relay today and it only does the 4 second interval.
I turned the intermittent wipers on. During the initial sweep, I turned it off. After waiting 10 seconds, I turn it on and leave it on. Only does the 4 seconds. Even tried varying the times, it still stays at 4 seconds. The relay says it is programmable between 0.5 seconds and 20 seconds.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm assuming they sent you the KAE relay.
Try this:
Pull the stalk towards you to (for windshield washers) while the wipers are set to intermittent. This initiates the timer. If left alone at this point it will default to the 20s interval. Pull the stalk towards you again and it will set the timer to that interval, anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds. _________________ '85 Westy |

That worked! Thanks for the speedy reply. I am psyched to have variable intermittent wipers now. IMO, one of the best/easiest mods you can do to a Vanagon. Thanks again for every ones help. _________________ “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. They're the best man.
I was happy to find that the 99 relay works on my '81. You have to flip the wiper lever up/down, but works great and uber handy in wet coast weather.

One of the reasons I love this site...
I'd been annoyed with my stock wiper delay since I bought the van a few yrs ago. Never seemed to be at the right time delay for any given condition.
Installed the relay from loogy's link last night.
Simple, easy to use.
Decided I'd swap in new 21 and 19" wiper blades to enhance the new capability!...
Not foggy or rainy here, yet.. So I washed my windshied a few times on the way to work this morning to try it out. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

That's a pretty neat wiper mod. Another handy one is an interrupt switch. This allows you to stop the blade in the straight up position, so that you can roll down the window, reach out and slap the blade against the windshield to remove the ice (without pulling off the road).
Hmm ... now, if I could easily heat the windshield squirters ... |

Finally had a chance to demostrate these to my wife tonight. I played with the variable timing on the freeway all the way home until she finally asked what the hell I was doing.
"I thought you'd never ask..."
I tried explaining to her the function, but as with most van related conversations, she perhaps listened to 5% of what I was saying. That's okay, I've got you guys to share with... right? _________________ '85 Westy |

Classic....I'm lucky if mine listens to any of it. On the other hand, she never gets on my case for spending money on my van so I guess it's ok. _________________ '89 Syncro Westy

Mid 80's Mercedes benz 300se washer tank..comes complete with a regulated heating coil and 2 pumps..one for the wipers one for the headlights..just plumb it to your front heater hose.
I just picked one up at the P&P there are a lot of 80's Benz's w/ pink engines |
