Hi,

I've been lurching here for a while throwing at you questions from time to time. Now as my 67 is finally show worthy I'd like to share some photos of my beloved Vee Dub.

I'm working for the importer of VW in Iceland and today, as a part of internal marketing of our brands, we introduced the history of the Volkswagen brands to our fellow workers.

Along with a picture gallery ranging from Ferdinand Porsche to modern day 2009 Golf/Rabbit we also displayed a 1952 split Beetle owned by the company and along with my 1967 Beetle.

Needles to say the brand introduction attracted huge amount of interest, especially due to the Vee Dubs.

Here are some photos of my 67 and the old 52.

They both look pretty darn fine to me!

The only thing that really doesn't look right to me to me are the wheels, they both should have two-tone paint on them. Those '67 wheels with the flat hubcaps look especially "off" to me with the centers not being black.

Thank you Andy for your comments. I understand though that some of the 67 Euro Beetles came with silver colored wheels like this.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure if the 1967 1200 Standard had solid painted wheels or not, but that would have been the model that had it. Your 1300 has way too much chrome on it to be a Standard though!

Beautiful! I am usually in favor of the bolder VW colors, but I have never seen VWs with a neutral color paint that I like so much as these.

And I'm digging the skinny tires. I don't see that very often.

I am not too familiar with the Euro variations. Are the headlights fluted or smooth? I thought that the Euro style was a fluted cover over a smooth bulb, and the American version was the opposite. I can't tell from the photos, but it looks kind of like double fluting, at least on the 67.

Great looking cars! I agree with Andy about the wheels. I have a friend that has a 67 European deluxe with a 1300 6volt. I saw her car before it was restored and her Euro had the charcoal black centers with the L-91 silver on the rim. FYI Andy the only beetles that had different wheel rim colour would be the 64-66 Sea-Blue cars. The rims on those cars were painted L-289 blue-white with charcoal black centers.
The only thing I have a problem with ( it's just my opinion ) is white wall tires.
Al, tell us and show us about the place where you work.

Well, you know, I had my COTC book open earlier today, looking to see if it mentioned if the Standard/1200 models had two-tone wheels or not, and saw two body colors in 1967 that had Cumulus White outer rim paint instead of the normal Lotus White, those were L633 VW Blue and L595 Fontana Gray.

Also noticed that in 1964-66 L519 Bahama Blue cars also got the blue-white outer rims along with the Sea-Blue cars you mentioned.

Anyway, that's off-topic. On topic though, since I had my COTC books open, I thought I'd looked up the 1952 colors, and it looks like both whites offered in 1952 had red inner hubs on the wheels for Deluxe models, which is a combination that I always thought looked a bit odd.

NICE looking cars!

Odd for a Euro to have American style overriders, though.

Thank you for your info Don. The black/silver combo sounds interesting. I have to ask the "old guys" who sold these cars back in the days if this combo was indeed the one that would fit my 67.

Regarding the white wall tires I've have numerous sources here in Iceland telling me that the white walls were extremely popular here, especially by the younger owners. I kind of like it. Makes the car more contrasty.

I understand that the Icelandic market was kind of an in-between market region as we indeed are European but at the same time the US army was based here from right after WWII until 2006 resulting in a huge market for new vehicles sold directly to the "Yanks" (Kanar we called them), who then exported their vehicles for free from Iceland to the US after their stay here. This may be the reason for the kind of in between Beetles we have here.

Well, just a theory though. But this version was called DeLux.

One more point regarding the import of the Beetle to Iceland that may be interesting for us VW fans.

Iceland was the third country to which Volkswagen exported the Beetle. The first two being Holland and the UK I believe.

For what it is worth, I have a 1967 1500 that was purchased in Germany and brought to the US a couple years later. I purchased the car from the original owner. It is a deluxe version of the 67 so it has some features the two optioned down models did not have. Interesting thing it seems to be a mix of 1966,67,68 changes.
•Early front fenders
•Thin later style 67 trim
•Disc brakes
•4 lug bolt pattern
•Wheels are black with raised nipple type 4 lug caps
•Steering lock next to the column
•6Volt
•Cloth interior inserts front and back
•VW1500 deck lid script
•US spec bumpers, I don’t think these were converted. No evidence this was done.
•Shoulder belts
Can’t really think of what else.

Beautiful cars, Al.

I'm curious about the radio trim on the 67. Wouldn't it have had the chrome tabs on either side that lined up with the fuel gauge tab and the glove box trim?

This list is typical. There are a couple fo other items:
- Is your speedo MPH or KPH?
- Are your rear turn signals really orange plastic, with red dye sprayed on the inside to turn them red?
- Wheels all black, or black with white?
- No 4-way flasher
- Headlamp flasher with ignition off?

Beautiful car you have, your pride in it is evident and it is well justified!
I nicely restored Beetle is truly a thing of beauty.

Enjoy it by driving it as well as looking at it.
