Got it home. Not completely sure what we have. But it’s ours. Needs a new crank and flywheel

Handsome Baja. An old friend of mine used to use similar 8-spoke wheels on his Baja and they worked well offroad, although many times he was told that they would break easily. Had no trouble until somebody stole 1 of them (why steal just one????). Then it turned out that the ones being sold then were not the same as his older ones, so he went out and bought a new pair and use the "odd" one as a spare to replace the previous steel spare.
BTW...Your Baja should probably have been posted in the "show your Baja" thread. But no sweat. Still basically an offroad VW. _________________ Richard

Picked up a crusty old rail a few weeks ago. Someone was off to a good start before abandoning it in a barn, as it has a 3-rib bus trans-axle, what I think are type 3 heads, a Holley 5200 carb and I'm sure a few other surprises. Starting from front to back I'll be rebuilding it as a woods buggy to be flat towed to crown land for back country camping where ever it will take me. This is my first air cooled VW (if you can call it a VW), but I'm already pretty happy with how simple they are. Definitely an easy transition from working on old motorcycles!

I am finishing this one... but running into a few issues...
A friend helping with some of the wiring:
So the issues that I am running into... axles are not the same... not sure how the heck I missed that. Now I got to search for one that matches. With the spline being shorter, I can get the castle nut to go in enough to insert the cotter pin.
Not looking forward to removing the axles...
And now, since I am going to have to remove axles and whatnot... I have this itch to do an engine swap with my '61 bug... that dual carb engine would be better used (used more) in the bug than the rail...

You don't say and your pictures do not show, but I'm going to assume your car has swingaxle. So you have short axle on one side and long axle on the other side. Or if the axle housings are the same length, then you have long axle/short spline on one side and long axle long spline on the other side. Your picture of the engine doesn't help us with this.
This is the "Show off your buggy" thread. Best if you post a separate new thread about your axle problem. _________________ Richard

Here's my fun little Sand Sprite I! I've had it about 5 years, but finally got it back up and running this winter. Standby for a short build/resto thread in the main forum.
How I got it:
How it currently sits (no, it hasn't been repainted, just different cameras/lighting):

Just bought this a couple of weeks ago. Supposedly a 1915cc, has dual Weber 44s, power steering, cutting brakes, etc. It's pretty rowdy. Currently rewiring the whole thing as there isn't a fuse or gauge in the whole turd.

In the hands of the powdercoaters now.....
4 seat, VW based. I made the frame myself with a removable rear suspension design. I wanted a short wheelbase mostly for logging roads/camping. Its only 2" longer than stock

Just picked this sand rail up. If anyone knows anything about this frame please let me know. Thank you.

Does not look like any commercially made frame.
To quote the old Eric Clapton tune from the 70s:
"Home grown's all right with me,
Home grown is the way it should be.
Home grown is a good thing.
Plant that pill and let it rain."
I think you can tell what that was about, and it was not about tube frame rail buggies. But the idea is there. If well done, a home built buggy can be a good thing. That rail looks mostly OK. Some things I would do different, but that doesn't mean it's all wrong either.
Like I would cut out the diagonal 1.5" tubes in the lower sides and replace them and add others out of 1" x .065 tube in all of the spaces between the vertical tubes in that lower section. Like Xerophobic's buggy. _________________ Richard

Thank you for responding. I can't wait to get a better look as my father has yet to go get it. It's going to be a fun little project, he just got 8 acres of land we can play on. Can't decide what engine to run yet. I just built my own VW engine last month and haven't even had it in the bug yet. |

Second post
Even a blind squirrel... I wasn't looking but somehow stumbled upon this time machine just a couple miles from the house just a couple days ago and picked it up for a song. Not something you see everyday in Alaska- Johnny's Speed & Chrome Invader built with (mostly) '72 Transporter guts in the late eighties/early nineties. I was told 'decent cam and big jugs', and some really funky but working sheetmetal intakes with Motorcraft/Holley dual carb setup. Three rib 002 IRS transaxle, Jamar cutting brakes, OG Jackman front spindle mount skinnies, and original seat pans with covers. At the moment I'm just stoked trying to get it up and running (see post about mystery rear calipers) for the summer to rip up the beach!
