That is commonly called a "Short Back". Originally designed by Chenowth. But made by a great many builders across the US. If yours is a Chenowth, it will have a steel tag with a chassis serial number welded on the frame . To the torsion housing or maybe somewhere else in the lower part of the cockpit area.
I owned a similar short back in the 1970s made by Sand Toys in Orange County, CA.
Some one recently wrote a thread asking about their Chenowth and a picture of Chenowth's ad for this style buggy. It should be on the front page of this forum list as I write this. _________________ Richard

Glass so that rocks can be kicked up into it and break it? |

Get some Polycarbonate plastic, it scratches easily, but it is unbreakable. They do make a scratch restraint, but it is way more expensive.
Acrylic scratches too and it is breakable. _________________ Prosit!

Hi- new guy here in s.e. Michigan. I picked up my first sand rail a couple months ago, a 1983 Appletree "Desert Phantom 2 seat long back" with a 1600 dual port. I've slowly been getting it road ready for this summer. I hope to build it into a fun, inexpensive street buggy that may see one or two camping trips to Silver Lake sand dunes a year. Looking forward to learning all I can on the Samba!

Here is my new buggy I just picked up on Saturday! It's on a 69 chassis. I think it is a 1 of a kind?

It's street-legal, has more power than it should and I love just exploring through the tulies. It's always been a work in progress.

It's a long two seater but I have no idea what frame it is. Powered by a hot little Ford V6. I had to install the rear fenders to keep from beat to death by the little rocks kicked up by the rear tires whenever I'm running down some old mining road. It's street legal and has already embarrassed several pocket racers who thought it would be easy pickings!

Here is my new to me 1-1600 short course car. Just purchased on the 29th of June. The engine is in about 3 large totes. I have wanted an air-cooled and off-road race car for a long time and what better way to learn than rebuild someone's mess? |
