|
|
So I am going to be dropping my engine/trans in my syncro to update to a 2.5 subie. While this is out I was planing on doing a tank re-seal and updated SS straps. Where can I get a new sending unit and seal at for my syncro can I? Where is the best place to buy this stuff, found straps and re-seal kit at gowesty... Anything else I should do while I have the engine out of the vehicle? _________________ 86 Syncro

I de-rusted, touched up and undercoated the engine bay from the back to the firewall. I am probably never going to get another chance to do that... unless the tank leaks
Ken at www.vanagain.com is apparently importing aftermarket fuel level senders very soon. He posted this to the Vanagon and Syncro mailing lists. You'll have to call him for details, though.

Once you have the tank out, you are in for load of work but if your van is rust free all you should have to down under there is clean. I would paint it as well due to the fact they really didn't get much paint under there at the factory.
Mine was super rusty so I have to fabricate some new metal pieces and do some welding but then I painted everything with POR15. I was a bit anal with the whole deal.
I heard the sending units and seals are NLA but if Ken is working on it, perhaps he will be your source. _________________ 86 Syncro Wolfsburg edition

Cool, I will have to order some POR15 then was planing on doing that anyway. My Fuel sender is still operating properly so I guess i will just scrap that Idea, just thought it would be nice. I was just out there looking up under her, there is some rust but things don't look NEARLY as bad as some of these pictures I see on here, hope it's not to bad on the top side of the tank?
Thanks

Be careful when pulling the tank. On top there are two plastic vent valves. It is very easy to break the nipples off of them. At ~$35 each it behooves you to study the Bently and proceed with caution.

I did this a few months ago a biscally full reconditioning of every bushing, hose, etc on the underside of my syncro. Allot of work but worth it
Here's a list of what I did
resealed tank
Hydrolic hose PS lines
All new vent lines
fuel pump
fuel filter
SS tank straps
SS piece the sender attaches to
New SS coolant lines
Entire scapping of underbody and POR on rust and 3 coats of truck bedliner follwed by a coat of wax on everything and spray grease on any nuts and bolts
Cleaned, POR rusty spots only and did Mortons truck Bed liner (3 coats) every where else
Did the same thing to the entire engine bay
Also take the time to get the area behinde each of the taillights to scrape out the old seam sealer and replace it. This is th esource of the most common rear panel seam rusting form water and condensation from the temp changes inside the engine bay. Additionally who may want
Change the bushing in your shift linkage, the boot off the transaxle, make sure your vaucuum actuators are good
Additionally Anthony J. on the classifieds sells all the stuff mentioned and has better prices than the vandors and has Stainless stuff they dont have:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?username=Anthony+Jaundoo
Here are whole bunch of pics
Using a 5ft pipe to get it out
New stuff goes in
cleaned up and resealed
Sandblasted and painted with POR
New radiator

Hefty, I've read a lot of your stuff, I really like your work +1 to you! Where did you get the SS piece that attaches to your sender? I wish these senders and seals where still available sort of a bummer. Was there any rust or problems on the top side of your tank? I am in limbo with the removing the tank Idea... Everyone I talk to says they've never seen a problem with the syncro tank and not to mess with it? My straps have some surface rust was going to maybe just POR them along with the rest of the under body... You used POR PATCH for all your seams then POR over them then bedliner right? _________________ 86 Syncro

my browser must have been acting up, I didn't get those pic's earlier thanks for taking the time and posting them! WTF I might as well drop the tank and re-seal... If my straps aren't that bad though I am going to just POR them dang SS straps are high dollar! Sorta tapping into my "saving" a little to much with this one lol. Hey I'm with you though, if your going to do it make it right the first time! _________________ 86 Syncro

Might as replace those hard to get at metal brake lines when your in there. Mine were toast. I did the same as Hefty Smurf but painted all grey por15. From front of the van to back. Talk about a lot of work, it is crazy, dirty time comsuming work. _________________ 86 Syncro Wolfsburg edition

I imagine a light grey paint would make it a lot easier to see what is going on in there later. _________________ Tencentlife said,

240gordy: Exactly, I wanted to be able to see the underside later and see how everything was holding up, plus it is always dark when you are under the van. _________________ 86 Syncro Wolfsburg edition

Gordy has a good point about the lighter color. I wish I would have done that on insides of my control arms, bc its a biaaatch to see any thing in there. Too bad they only come in black. _________________ -Lorenzo

I did not paint over it.
It was used on my skid plate and I have hit a lot of rocks with it so there are a few dents in it but no rust. I do not know about por but chasis saver works great brush or spray. One thing I like is they sell little cans of it. |
