Thanks for the clarification type2rescuemaine, now I feel a little better that they at least have a small hatch bus. This recreation may be sacrilegious to purists but a recreation of history is important and will make a nice display for a generation entering their twilight years. I would rather see a VW bus as an addition to the museum at Bethel NY than just the old school bus that is in their museum now. https://www.bethelwoodscenter.org

I don't know the exact year of the bus (maybe it was 1965??), but I saw on their Instagram page that they bought it, a wide-hatch bus, not knowing that the original Woodstock bus was a small-hatch '63. I think at this point was when they got in touch with Skinner Classics looking for a small-hatch bus, once again making a mistake with its year. |

The Woodstock event and the Woodstock bus were only original once. Doing it up a second time is rather pathetic. Leave the real memories to the ones that were lucky enough to experience it in real time and for the rest of us just watch the documentary again and play your well-worn vinyl album. Are they going to bring in mud too? And bad acid? An animatronic Wavy Gravy? Tribute bands of 25 year olds? The historic event is spawned from the era it was born into, never to be recreated. _________________ '67 Beetle

I have a useless comment, but since this thread is useless, here goes:
Wasn't Woodstock in '69? If so, that bus in the picture must have been relatively new, i.e. expensive for the time. I bet those "hippies" are just "yuppie" posers. No stinkfoot could afford a newer (at the time) bus.
Same thing for any other buses there: unless it was an early 50s model (doubtful) then most were relatively newer vehicles, right?
See, told you it was useless. |
A friend of mine was at Woodstock, in a 60's bus, (I can't recall the exact year) and he had just returned from Vietnam and bought the bus with some saved up wages. It was possible to afford a relatively new bus at the time.
I will ask him if he remembers the year and what he paid. And before all the "stoned hippy can't remember shit" jokes, he is pretty sharp and likely will remember it.
I don't think the bus would fetch huge dollars if it were found and sold, but it would definitely be worth more than a run-of-the-mill bus of the same vintage and condition. That said, many of those old hippies have joined society and it's capitalist evils to become quite wealthy. They would have the means to purchase the bus for their personal flashback museum.
I personally hope it is not found. I try not to allow images of tie-dyed hippies into my brain. |
A buddy(also a Vietnam Vet) from work told me a story about he, his bus, and his buds went to Woodstock.
After Woodstock one of them needed a ride back home to California.
So it was decided that they'd all load up in the VW Bus, and take the guy home.
They ran out of money along the way, but had a Texico Card, so they only stopped a Stuckys/Texico for gas and food on the way back to Pa. _________________ Good Luck

Update:
The recreation of the Light bus is headed to Florida for the installation of the interior which is stock grey with seats so I'm not sure why it needs to go to Florida. It heads to Bethel, NY for the 3 day anniversary of Woodstock Music Festival this spring 2019. I love our buses stock and loads of historical patina but living through the Woodstock years has me so intrigued due to great music and history of the times. Peace

This photo of Bob Heironomous painting the bus makes this repro OK by me. He did the original design, and is redoing it here. Nice.
