Don't know about the vehicle, but you've got some KDF engine parts there. They should be worth something.

Looks a bit like a van that BBT Bob has. Not as tall as a Matador, front mounted 25 hp engine. I just looked at my pics from Hessich weekend and I did not take a close up of it. It was parked all the way on the back left, behind the Matador.

Engine number on gen stand I see as 2-012182. It is not very clear though, but this would imply a 1942 engine?

PostPosted: Thu Oct 29, 2009 11:57 am    Post subject: the Catbox Reply with quote

It's pre Barn Door... known as the "Cat Box" and often called the "Cat Door" by Barn Door Cognoscenti. It is also occasionally referred to as a "Dogdoor" by a few haters.

The name "cat door" is historically significant because it is the first known usage of "cat" as referring to hipsters... and also one of the earliest usages of Beatnik lingo in general. The vehicle was built by Fester Addams in the mid 1940's when he was a rebel youth in eastern Europe. Fester coined the term "cat" several years before Jack Kerouak wrote his famous treatise of Beatnick Culture... titled "on the Road.

Fester is also Jesse James' birth mother's uncle. Jesse, who's real name is Pugsley, was later adopted by the James family... (more about that later). Jesse's Birth mother and father... and uncle Fester later became the subject of a western television series... called the Addams family.

A 60's copycat show... called the Munsters... attempted to steal the Addams' coachbuilding heritage by hiring George Barris to design a series of "Munster Mobiles" Dragula and the Munster Coach. Neither of these cars ever lived up to the "cat box" stylistically.

What is not well known, is that after the cancellation of the two rival television series... the competition between the Munster Family and the Addams... turned dark.. ultimately terminating with the execution style murders of Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday and Fester Adams by Herman Munster in 1972.

Lurch, the Addams' manservant was deemed by the courts as unfit to care for Pugsley. Thus came the adoption... and name change to Jesse... so as to avoid further trauma to him via torment by other children.

However Jesse's own TV show, Monster Garage... about customizing cars... is a quiet tribute to his uncle's coachbuilding heritage. Jesse (Pugsley) gave up his trademark striped crew neck t-shirt 60's surf style... to the long sleeve plaid... button up he is known for now in deference to the beat style his family created.

All right, you had me going for about a sentence or two Eric.....

Actually, looking at the pics again, there are some real early engine clues there, like the 2 flap lower tin. Also the case does no have bolts across the top seam like the '40s engines. The regulator and gen housing should both have date codes on them.

Interesting find.....!!

it may be a home made abortion, but pics don't say all. is it on a vw pan? what is the running gear from/like? the vw aircooled engine was maybe taken from a destroyed/beyond repair car at some point and fitted there. and for the lack of waterhoses and due to small size could be mounted without major issues. if it's on a vw pan it's just like the kohlruss... if not... then it's just a worthless bunch of rusty metal. my opinion, that is..
