Doubt it is homemade since there is at least 2 of them. |
I think it may be the same one. Look at the headlights, trim ring on the left, dents in the housing on the right, patina on the surface over the horn, proximity of the front corner to the fence post, etc. Obviously some stuff has either been removed from the inside, or added, depending on which pic is newer...

What was this van used for? I see that it has one side door - not really big enough to be an ambulance. Why would they have mounted the horn on the front like that? The horn location reminds me of the old 30's Beetle prototypes which also had them exposed. |

I'd say the chances of this being anything but a coachbuilt are very slim. Even so it shows a lot of attention to detail and if it predates the Type 2 it would definitely be a very desirable project to have. I'm no expert on Split engines but the KDF cogwheel logo on the engine parts should indicate pre-1946 running gear. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

I don't know a thing about the history of the Transporter, but this odd-ball reminds me of the Type 29 prototypes a bit.
It is overall a flatter design though - not as tall. |

Between the tempo and that small bus was a DKW auto union bus
A better pic of a DKW from the VW museum
I don't know what happen with that strange looking bus. Is somebody is looking to restore it? Where is it?
Very interesting bus.
Regards
