There's a LOT work that can be seen in this build thread, and I mean a lot but IF you get to see this Baja in person, it really shows! No doubt it's a heavier build but it's Hell-a-stout and really looks nice! I too have a heavy baja compared to most. Several friends have ridden along as say "it rides like a Caddy, or I can actually have a conversation while riding in your car as it's quiet inside..."
I cannot believe you took it in the mud after all the attention to detail. Love the videos and your commitment to this build thread!
On a side note, I've used the aftermarket 3" body lifts on two builds and have not had a problem w/strength tho I will say, yours isn't going to rot away or fail under beyond heavy stress loads.
Thank you for saving the day at Florence Or dunes this past weekend. The Hi-Lift jack and flat plate really saved my a$$!
Hope to roll w/you and your friend in March, will keep you posted as to dates and location.
Cheers,
HRT (Hot Rod Todd) Very Happy

Thanks Todd. Yours and all your friends bajas are nice too. Definately had fun rolling with all you. First time I've been out with more than one other Baja. You'll need to get me dates for march. You know my birthday is in April if you want to give me that extra tranny taking up space in your shop😉
I do have some more shit to do to the car. The projects never ends....

BTW NO matter what trans you build, if you drop the clutch on solid ground (pavement or concrete, wet or dry) you're going to break trannies, cvs and/or axles. In the sand or mud, where the tire(s) can slip, less shock is delivered to those yet still hard on even "built" parts. Even wet pavement w/those tall tires will break a tranny: bug or bus. I know, I've broke a few myself over the years in my street cars and know full well the tall heavier baja tire will snap a trans, cv or axle in no time at all. With this, I keep it in control on the road and minimize the abuse even on the dunes, gravel or mud: get to expensive of both time and $$$. Also note: reverse gear is weak in a bug or bus tranny - super easy to break!
The 3 rib Bus tranny will work best IMHO. Like we've talked about, it's what I've run in two builds. Most of the guys you met last wknd also run the 3 rib, tho one guy has a pyramid 5 rib and another a 6 rib 091 gear box that has a lot of internal mods (big $$$) - both have larger engines.
I don't know about the other guys but I've had GTA build mine w/Bus Super Diffs (4 spider gears) which hold up better when using the turning brake vs. regular street driving. With a "tractor built" 2275cc, 275/75/16 tires (~32" tall) I'm running ~2900 rpms at 65mph on the hwy. 2800-3200 rpms at cruzing speeds is best for cooling and longevity. "Short controlled bursts" of higher rpms when passing or playing off road are acceptable but not for long term driving - I'm sure you know all this, just reinforcing the info.
You've built a great baja, from looks to functionality! You will be very happy w/a Bus Trans for gearing a better strength.
See you on the Dunes!

The one thing good about that super tall geared tranny in mine is it does have a super diff. Someday I'll go to a bus. Need to get my engine built first though. The casino didn't cooperate last weekend either they were supposed to fund my trip and pay for new parts. Ended up being a donation weekend for me. Haha.

The boat canvas worked awsome BTW. I went through a much deeper hole than this one and barely had any water in the car after. Just a little tiny bit.

Ha Ha, my 49th is in March. We can both celebrate our BDays on the dunes! Sorry, not giving you the GTA built trans as a gift. You might keep your eyes on CL or here for a deal on a 3rib BUT I'd not pay more than couple hundred bucks for an old used one. The thing about used engines and trannies is you never know what you're getting, whether it be good or broken, what they say is in it vs. what actually is there when you crack it open or plug it in to try it. I've been burned MANY times over the years on both engine and trans but those people that sold me junk also never show their faces and car events...Chicken $hits! There are trustworthy people out there but think of how you drive you car, others may have done even worse torture to the parts your buying. I may not sell the trans we talked about as I've got a lot into it w/the Wedle gears, super diff and GTA build - It's an expensive paper weight but also nice back up piece of mind! I have a lead on a fresh GTA rebuild that I'll look into and follow up on asap. I don't think it has a super diff nor aftermarket gears but you could have a diff installed and have a killer trans from the get go... Stay tuned for dates, they are talking about Half Moon Bay CG & WinchesterBay.

Glad to hear the "boat cover" worked well!
Sounds like that "new" trans was built for a street car. The super diff will hold up and it was a single side plate, late mod. trans, so in theory it's a 3:88 R&P: strongest factory R&P and 1st gear but 2nd, - 4th are way to tall gears for tall tires and 4th is fine toothed and weakest of all (not that you'll be abusing it in 4th...).

Been awhile. I had (1) good tranny out of (6) I have. Kept swapping them out and I got to my last one and it worked. I took it mudding since then and showed up my jeep buddy. I have another post about this.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=651385
I decided to tear into it and do some todos I've been meaning to get to. I'm rebuilding the front end king n link pins and m going to cut and turn the front end some more. I have adjusters but maxed out she still sits a little low.
Or should I get heavy duty torsion leaves?
I don't want it to ride like a truck though. Just want a little more Hieght when needed.
Also going to wire my fuel pump relay to my oil pressure switch. And do a bunch of other stuff I've been meaning to get to. I'm also in the process of building another 1835 with more torque of a cam and better flowing heads. Thinking about getting jet Drs for my dellortos too. Also would be nice to find some kind of snorkel system that would work well with duals.

You might pull the torsion packs and see if any are broken. In looking at your front end pics, it appears the adjusters are set at the right posistion for max lift: meaning welded into the correct position.

As for carb hats: CB sells full hats for use w/blow thru turbo or relocating fresh are intakes to higher positions.

I'd be concerned w/connecting the fuel pump to shut off w/oil pressure sender. there's a lot of fuel left in the float bowl that will allow the engine to keep running long enuf to cause internal damage, even if the pump is shut off when oil light goes on.

I think your torquey 1835 will be good. Keep a stock weight flywheel, not a lightened one and get a heavy front pulley. Give a lot of bottom end "grunt". Running both these on my 2275 and really makes a difference to the torque. # one thing most people do is Over carb and over cam. Keep it simple and you'll have a lot of fun!
What do you all think?

its just an 1835. My first ever complete engine build. I figured if it doesn't grenade, then i will look into building a stroked motor down the road.
Its got a WEBCAM 218, Full Flow, machine in sand seal, lightened flywheel, DRD heads 40x35.5 dual spring with 1.1:1 rockers, dual 36 DRLA, .009 dizzy. I have a SVDA electronic ignition Dizzy i'm going to put on there to see if it helps off the line.
and yes still running a freeway flyer LOL. Engine seemed to do pretty good. I was able to run her up to 6K when needed without any problems.
Hopefully i will be driving her to rose burg sooner than later and i will be able to tell how she does compared to my old tired 1835.

I need a sugar mama to help me to afford everything i need for this car. Or to build my 69 into a wanna be race car. LOL

Right on! Glad to hear the fresh 1835 is working good! The next step will be a good 3rib bus trans: stronger & better gearing. If/when u do the next engine build, i'd suggest keeping the stock weight flywheel vs the lightened now on it. We all need a "sugar momma" to support us but we'll have to build'em one piece at a time. Cheers from Okinawa!

why keep a stock weight flywheel? I thought the 3 rib was the worst of the bus trannys?? or am i thinking of something else??

I'm not sure yet. I'm waiting on my buddy to decide if he is going or not. I probably won't know until that week

I think u have forgotten details from our conversation last year. A three rib will be perfect but you don't want to use a 1968 Bus Three rib (a one year only trans that was as week as a big trans). This can easily be determined by looking, if is has 6 acorn nuts around the CV flange, it's a 68 only. The three rib works great w/taller tires. It's what Ken @ GTA has built for both of my bajas & works great w/my 2275 or previously 1835. 2nd gear is the main gear, 1st acts like a granny gear in old pickup & 3on the flats. 4th is hwy gear.

Stock flywheel give you more bottem end torque & momentum: both needed for off roading. Lightened flywheels are great for street bugs but not as great w/heavier Bajas & tall tires. My 2275 has a stock heavy flywheel plus a heavy degree pulley which acts like a tractor motor w/a lot of torque (more torque better for off road than HPower unless u got A LOT of it!).
