|
|
I've got a massive amount of scaling type rust on the roof of my Standard but there is still enough OG paint to warrant shooting Masterseries Clear over it to protect.
Anybody have methods to remove the scaled rust without hurting the OG paint too much? I tried out a red scuff pad and it works OK but probably not going to be aggressive enough on the bare metal.
Thanks, NAES _________________ Barndoor Mafia

Scaled rust? I'm not really sure what you're talking about, but if you want to get the rust off the original paint you can use CLR and a Scotch Bright pad. |

Scaled rust means really fucked up, peely and will flake off. I'm referring to the bare metal itself. I'm familiar with the CLR method of scrubbing thanks to Skim.
Here's what my effed up roof looks like on the perimeter.

have you thought about PorPatch? Otherwise looks like youre going to need some new metal welded in? |

Not going to weld in new metal. If I start that process I might as well clip in a whole new roof. Not worth it for this bus. I'm backing the holes with fiberglass and epoxy resin just to keep the water out. Then I'll spray it with clear to sort of stop future rusting. Believe me, I'm not delusional enough to think I'm solving the problem, more like a very long term band-aid.
If I figure something out I'll post up.

PorPatch is the same stuff as Por 15 except that it comes in a tube, and has the consistancy of pudding. Its good for small holes, especially with some tape or something for backing to hold it in place while it cures. It will seal up the holes. You can also just smooth it out over severe pitted surface rust with a putty knife or something. I think it would be better than epoxy resin. Fiberglass resin over rust wouldnt have very good adhesion. |
