my new 9-seater, 75 automatic
original 1800 fi motor & 003 trans
i will be posting all the work i do to this bus here
just making it road worthy & learning how to work on a automatic
the bus turned on when i bought it,but no road test on tranny
actual condition unknown
last registered in 1997
after getting it home
the engine was cleaned out (lots of debris inside)
compression was 110,110,120,95,
new.......
fuel/vac lines & fuel filter
injector bushings & intake gaskets
oil/filter,plugs & wires
cap/rotor & coil
the throttle body was taken apart, cleaned then rebuilt
& everything put back together
now before putting the vacuum lines on this
one year only automatic only fi system
someone broke into the bus & stole tool box & camera
so no pics of before & after on engine cleaning
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=384671&highlight=
since then i have gotton this bus to run, vacuum lines are not exactly right yet
it leaks oil like an open faucet, from push rod tubes & rear main seal
so now dropping engine will be a must
im debating on how far to go with the engine
i want to replace main seal & replace push rod tube seals
without removing heads & be done
do you think that at this point i should remove heads & check them or
just let them be
in the mean time here are some pics with my new camera
& more to come..................

Nice find there...if you have good enough compression, i wouldn't mess with the heads IMO. I say fix the oil leaks and just drive it, since you just wanna make it road worthy and not restore it or anything. When are you planning on dropping the engine anyways? _________________ First Vehicle:

OK is this any closer.
The intake plenum might have a few different outputs but this is a general idea.
The one on the right is for the '75 auto.

Rear main seal & push rod tube seals have been replaced
new brakes & shocks in the front & rear
& im now driving around town
All the lights work
& the bumpers have just been painted
ill post some new pics after im done with the rubbing compound
Since im green when it comes to the automatic
how normal or bad do you think the tranny is if..............
it shifts like any used car from 1st to 2nd (I guess)
but then it wont shift into 3rd until the rpm's are at 3500-4000(40mph)
& I let go of the gas for a second
once im on the freeway, im going 60mph @3800rpm STILL IN 3RD
I pushed it to 70mph but it still never shifted into 4th
The transmission fluid was changed but the filter screen was not
(wrong one was sent from go westy)
Any advise? _________________ order your BAY WINDOW T-SHIRT here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1526918

Yessir, that,'s correct. I was going to respond this morning when I saw the post but ran out of time before I had to dash out into the snow and off to work. The automatic is 3 speeds forward and one reverse, as shown here in the 1975 owner's manual, courtesy of the Technical section of this site:

i started out with rubbing compond
but there was so much build up
that it took about 6 hours of buffing to reach the paint
in the very back
so i rewashed the bus using ajax & a scrubber
then rubbing compond
..........then wax on wax off
here are pics from
a show back in june of 2010
all i have really done is deep clean the bus
i started putting some miles on it & getting a feel for it
and then it stopped shifting past 1st gear
so its been sitting for a while
insted of rebuilding the 003 automatic tranny (73-75 buses)
i decided to upgrade it with a 010 automatic (76-up buses)
i picked up a doner 79 auto to use for the swap
in the process i will also be swapping out the 1800 for a 2.0(not the 79 2.0)
im on the fence about upgrading the automatic fi
from 75 vacumm controlled fi
to the 76-79 fi
i have been working on taking pics & documenting the differences
on the 2 tranny's
and i will be writing a thread on the details & exactly whats needed
to swap out the 003 for 010 _________________ order your BAY WINDOW T-SHIRT here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1526918

while the motor & tranny were out
i sanded down & repainted the engine compartment
with KRYLON PUMPKIN ORENGE paint
the color was a near perfect match to the original vw orenge
(pics coming soon)
the 010 76-79 trans is in
& 2.0 motor with hydrolic lifters is in
just installed new tires
now im hauling ass & its very hard to keep it "under" 70mph
i love this 3speed automatic
it has so much more get up & go, over my westy
i dont know if it's the automatic trans
or the fact that the westy weighs a thousand pounds more
maybe not 1000 pounds but pretty close with all the caninets, plus camping gear,etc......
next are the accessories...........
including a full deluxe package
belt line trim (i have already done)
chrome door pulls
chrome door handles
chrome window cranks
chrome beltline trim for the inside
& i cant leave out the deluxe jail bars
lets not forget raingutters for front windows
& scratch guards for the front door handles
deluxe bumper trim (black rubber on the center of 73-79 bumpers)
bumper guards
i hope to have all these things done by june 2011 (in time for the vw classic)
i have just acquired a 100% complete overhead a/c system
that i hope to install by summer "2012" _________________ order your BAY WINDOW T-SHIRT here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1526918

As promised here are some engine pics
In this pic
The top part with the serial # is krylon orange
The bottom half (outside of engine compartment)is original orange
s
installing front speakers
I bought a new radio & speakers
When it came time to install speakers
I could not bring myself to hacking nearly perfect door panels
Or trashing the og kick panels
Where or where to install speakers in the front ????
The only option I could come up with was custom speaker panels under the dash
Before
The build…
This piece was mounted to the support bar for the hand brake
Then a complete skin
i covered the skin with vinyl from a rear hatch panel
that way the pattern would be consistent
if you did look under the dash
Unless you get on your knees & look under the dash
You could not tell that its there

I like it, nice work!
Except for the vapor hoses being linked together in the ceiling of the compartment and the lack of heat booster fan hoses _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

man do you have good eyes for spotting defects (in a good way)
yes, i removed the T from the middle & connected vapor lines together
what you cant see is that i reinstalled the T on the pass side of engine compartment then ran the vapor line around the sides to the charcoal canister
that way when i have the hatch access panel open the vapor line is
always 100% out of the way
the booster fan hoses were not in the pic but they are there now _________________ order your BAY WINDOW T-SHIRT here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1526918

A small item to respond to, but important nonetheless;
Those 2 sharp screw ends that are protruding from your engine cover are gonna tear you a new one. (License plate frame bolt/screws). Mine were just like that, and I cut them off and put a piece of tape over the ends after a couple of head scrapes that could have been a whole lot worse.
Project is looking good Raul! _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia (Happy Trails, SOLD)

looking more & more like a true deluxe
here is a pic of 75-79 door pulls
they never made chrome door pulls or cups for 75-79 buses
but...
1968 door pulls are (technically 1 year only)
almost exactly the same
the only thing differant is the mounting plate
other than the 2 extra holes
they are the same !!!
and i was able to install the 68 only deluxe door pulls on my 75
without any mods just bolt-on & go
here is what my door panels look like now

Hey Raul, I find the same thing with my auto, which is in a Westy. It is powerful and buttery smooth. Unless you tried one, you would never fathom how much get up an go the autobox has.
I just wanted to say that the paint that you used on your fan shroud is perfect. It looks like the original colour, and is the first fan shroud paint job that I have seen that didn't look cheeseball silver. Very nice. _________________ *****************

well i gave up on the 75 only automatic only fi sytem
and updated it to a 76-78 automatic fi system from a 77auto
to do the change i swapped out
the air-cleaner ............. the 75 cleaner has no vacumm port
the throttle body ...........the 75 has advance,retard & a 3rd vac port,77 only has a advance
plenum .......................the 75 has 1 extra vac port, i could have just capped it but i had the correct one
decel valve.........75 decel valve is eletric, the 76-79 automatic valve is vacumm controlled
fi harness ................
air flow meter
ECU
all the other fi parts are interchangable between the 75auto fi & 76-up auto fi
AAR
cold-start
temp-2
thermo switch
doulble relay
S -boot
injectors
currently the bus has a 2.0 engine with hydrollic lifter
010 automatic trans from a 79 bus
76-78 fi system from a 77bus
im still running the 75-78 heater boxes & exhaust
but will be installing 72-74 exhaust system in the near future _________________ order your BAY WINDOW T-SHIRT here http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1526918
