So, back in the winter of 2011 I replaced the top on this convertible.

The old top was pretty well used up, and I reinforced it with a brown tarp until replacement could happen.

I re-used these two bows.

The lower outer rear tack bows were replaced with some free scraps from Home Depot.

Also replaced those upright wood pieces on the sides of the frame.

This is a simple vinyl top, no fussy headliner or padding for me.

I'm happy with the top, and it is very easy to maintain and use.

Got some new tires too, for real driving.

So, I finally got this car registered and titled correctly as a 1964.

Some time after I bought it the car I realized the VIN on the tunnel was very hard to read, and somewhere along the way the first digit was recorded wrong, and the car was registered and titled as a '62. There were a few obvious signs of it being a '64 too (see page 1 of this thread).

So I started with a call to my insurance company, then a trip to my local registry of motor vehicles. They gave me the correct forms to apply for a title change and to get a visual VIN verification. For this, I drove to my local Police station and had an officer verify the VIN visually. I sent my forms in and requested a VIN change and model year change.

Unfortunately the state title department sent it all back to me and requested a letter from the vehicle manufacturer to confirm that the VIN corresponded to a 1964 VW. I would have thought they would have that information themselves, but oh well.

So I surf over to vw.com and they have live chat. I asked about getting a letter to confirm the model year of my bug. Eventually they pointed me to the museum in Germany to get a birth certificate for the car. Before applying for a birth certificate, I checked out this thead on the Samba:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=398

I was glad I read the most recent pages on the above thread. Seems like it could take 8-12 months to get a birth certificate from Germany. "Forget that", I said to myself. My RMV form from my insurance company was only good for 30 days.

I quickly pulled some VW books off my bookshelf and found four good sources that verified my model year and VIN. I made some copies, contacted the title department, explained what I had for verifying documents and they said that was OK. Another trip to the local registry and $75 later I finally had the correct model year and VIN on my reg. and title.

Here are the books I used to document my VIN and model year:

- Volkswagen History to Hobby by Bob Cropsey
- VW Idiot's guide by John Muir
- Volkswagen Illustrated Buyer's guide by Peter Vack (motorbooks)
- Wolfsburg West catalog

Did that tack strip trim come with your top?
My current top has that type of strip but the new top didnt come with a strip. I really dont want to spend $300 on chrome trim since I dont want the chrome anyways.

Out and about in my 64 vert today. Weather was cold but clear. Hopefully an early end to winter here in the Boston area.

I drove the 64 vert 295 miles down to Northern NJ last weekend for the AirRaid VW event Island Dragway, Great Meadows, NJ.

Met up with a bunch of other VW friends at a Brew Pub in Jersey.
