Looking good Joe! The R9s sure do enhance the appearance of your van. I'm glad to hear it drives well and the fitment met all your expectations. You should post up some higher quality photos when you have a chance.

Love the R9's on your Vanagon Joe. I am very happy for you!
Hope to see the Vanagon around town again soon so I can inspect them in person.
Cheers! _________________ Andy

Here's another set, looks like these might be the genuine AMG's and not Ronals due to the machined lip.
16", could be the ET 11 ones, but still maybe worth checking into:
http://denver.craigslist.org/pts/2152192917.html
There was a set of 16" ET 35's on Ebay a couple of weeks back.
(What the hell? I finally have a set and still can't stop looking for them...) _________________ Joe T.

Man those are some nice looking rims. I wish I had a set!
Glad they are working out for you Joe.
I'm liking the stock look myself, especially with new 195/75/14 BFG AT's.
See ya in Moab this May. |

Nice...and you have the stock center caps.
You would not believe what I paid for my last set of 4 NOS R9 ceter caps.
They are now being reproduced and are available on eBay. |

That's sad, that'd be perfect for you
It's written CIL for the English rims....I can't find anything about CIL...
That's crazy how they were all copying design about these rims back in the days
I love these rims, but with my huge calipers on the front,I have to give up...to much offset will result.
It took me years to find some, and I found these just in Honolulu

I'm in the process to put a set of Nokian WR 205/70/15 on my stashed set of Ronal R9s. Does anyone know what size & style lug nut fits down in that quite small hole?
also Insyncro, I have 2 of the Ronal lettered caps (color still in letering but not perfect) if you/anyone has 4 of the mercedes star to swap even for? could swap images 1st of course. PM me

You can use the 19mm head Carat lug nuts, but the holes in the rims are on the small side so the stock lug wrench doesn't fit. I use a 19mm socket from a 3/8" drive set and it is slim enough that it fits in there without any issues.

I use and recommend Loggy's parts to plush wheel mounting.
I have a long, thinwalled SnapOn socket designed for lugs and has a protective covering on it so it wont nick the finish on the wheelset. |

These rims should use the same nuts as the vanagon steel rims,at least that's what mine are using.
They have a seat made out of steel, like a pressed in washer.Hole M14.
Some of them don't have the seat pressed in,because they are M12.

A little more information about these wheels. I just installed a set, based partly on details from this thread and I thought I'd update.
Ronal R9s are not a direct bolt-up to the Vanagon. This is based on a stock 1985. The wheels are 16mm thicker than stock steelies, so the stock lugs and bolts have almost no thread engagement. Longer hardware is required. Also, they do have the Mercedes seat on the lug holes so you'll need a different set of nuts.
No spacers required, the +23 fit very nicely with 205/70-15 tires. And they look good. There are now two Westys in Colorado running them...

They are a direct bolt-up for Vanagons that came with factory alloy wheels. The lug nuts for Vanagon steel wheels are too short and would need replacing when switching to any alloy wheel. R9s have the same taper seat as the Carat wheels, so the factory Carat hardware does work on them. The Vanagon steel wheel hardware uses a ball seat, so in addition to being too short, the seats are also incompatible.

Ah, it makes sense that factory alloys would need longer hardware. Thanks for clarifying. _________________ SlowCarFast.com |

I have four, but now I want a fifth. When I get a fifth, I'll probably want another set....
In my constant search for these wheels, I saw these on German Ebay. One does have just a wee bit of curb damage.
But check out those center caps.
