I'd ask to see a picture of the bolt holes from the inside before I pulled the trigger. Why? Last year i bought a second set of Ronal R28 rims, so I'd have a spare to mount on my new tire carrier, plus some back up in case I hit a curb. It turned out one of the wheels had been bored out and re-bushed for some other lug spacing. Totally blind sided me, never would have thought of it. The guy did make good on it, but it was a hassle.
Those wheels are probably fine, but it wouldn't hurt to ask for another view.
Yeah, I know, I worry too much....... _________________ '85 Wolfsburg Edition Westfalia Weekender, Zetec #36, w/ Peloquin TBD

Whoa I didn't notice that...I see R9's and get little Ronal R9 stars in my eyes. _________________ Joe T.

isn't that as good as it gets for an R9 ?
I mean ET23 is about 1/4" of poke on the front and ET 11 for the rear is ok too. maybe less with a 7" maybe only 1/8" of poke.
plus they are staggered 16" so that is a huge plus as far as an R9 goes.
is there an R9 made with a closer ET to "perfect" 30 ?
check the chart. it's not 100% reliable, but close.

I had these wheels on my van. With the tires I had on it, it was ridiculously burly, but I wasn't ready to put a zombie plow on the front end so I switched to a less surly looking wheel. It's already black on black, so I feel like anything to make it look friendlier helps. The Pentas also wouldn't fit the big brakes kit.
As for spray, I didn't notice a lot of spray on the sides with ET23, but the new wheels/spacers with ET 25 225/70R16 tires do spray the sides, not sure why, but I don't really care. I'm neurotic about the car wash anyway. Maybe the tire pattern??
Anyway, my penta's are up for sale with tires if anyone wants them.
This is before I repainted them post apocalyptic black....

Oh, forgot to mention. The side door slid on the tire sometimes, but it wasn't enough that I was ever concerned about it. _________________ 1987 Orly Blue Sunroof Syncro, EJ25 |

The splash and slight sliding door rub was likely due to your tire choice. The extra poke from the 7" wheel at ET23 should be minimal. Your 15x7 ET23 5x112mm wheels per your ad should be perfect specs a Vanagoner who wants R9's. Good luck on the sale. _________________ BenT |

No, 4,75 inches are 120,65mm.
My Guess is that they are in fact metric, as 120mm is a common BMW bolt pattern. _________________ 1991 VW Multivan syncro 1,9 TD |

4.75 is not 112 and yes, ask for pictures of the mounting areas, many screw these rims up trying to mount them to different vehicles. |

It's 25.4 mm = 1 inch
Using those figures 4.75" x 25.4 = 120.65mm as others have pointed out. The R9's were popular with the BMW crowd. Happens to be a Chevy bolt pattern as well. Unfortunately, they typically have very low offsets (ET) which makes them difficult to adapt to Vanagons even with adapters.
If the offset is close to the ideal ET30, it might be worth having redrilled to the correct bolt pattern. _________________ BenT |

Right on BenT.
I have seen Mustangs and Camaros with R9s that were not redrilled. |

Actually, all 16x8 and 16x9 Ronal R9s have a low offset - ET11 for the 8s and ET13 for the 9s. Ronal used the same basic wheel casting for these wheels and drilled them for 5x112, 5x114.3, 5x120, and 5x130. That's why they have such big lug nut bores. The only 16" R9 that is really Vanagon friendly is the 16x7, which has a 23mm offset.
There was a second generation R9 that was made for the Mercedes 190 and 300E with a much higher offset. Those wheels only came in 7" widths and have a 35mm offset. Those ones don't look as good, though, but with a minimal 5mm spacer, the fit would be just about perfect.

It only took 3 1/2 years, but I finally found a spare!!
Came up on Ebay this morning for cheap. 15x7 ET23, 5x112 just like my others. It's not powdercoated like my set, but I'm okay with that. It will spend most of its life under the front until I get a wild hair and decide to restore all five.

I just recently purchased two separate sets of five in that size and spec.
One set mint, the other all used but in good condition.
The second set can be used or sold as individual spares.
Not looking to dump any of them, just responding to the previous post saying it took 3 1/2 years to find one.
I probably paid more per rim than some, but I really like these R9s |

I've been able to find several over the years, but they've either been the wrong size/offset/bolt pattern, or they've been very expensive.
(There's that cheap Vanagon owner thing again.) _________________ Joe T.

For what I consider "mint" R9s I pay ~$175 per rim.
Less than $100 each if not mint, dinged, out of round, wheel weight marks on outer face....and especially if they have multiple layers of paint on them, but that turns out to be a good thing once striped and prepped for powder
I have the 15" and 16" versions that fit perfectly on a Syncro.
They look great! |
