I've used the search feature, but can't seem to figure this one out.

I pulled the engine to fix what I thought was a leaky rear main seal. The engine main seal wasn't leaking, it was the tranny mainshaft seal. A search of thesamba and a vist to my local VW parts store got me a new seal.

Here is the part I need help with. I've tried everything to get the seal out in one piece. From wood screws to a tiny thin knife. I think gasket sealer was used instead of just pressing it in. Anyone have this problem before?

You will need to make a gasket puller out of a piece of 1/8" X 1" mild steel flat bar. You are going to shape it into a bit of a hook which you can insert alongside the input shaft between the shaft and the seal. Force it in there, turn it 45 degrees to engage the hook with the hard rubber back side of the seal, clamp a big set of vice grips or even a slide hammer to it, and start reefing on it. You may also be able to lever against the hook by prying against the trans housing itself, but be careful not to apply too much force in any one area or you can crack the alloy.

DON'T try to dig the seal out around the outer edge; you will score the trans case.

Don't pry against the input shaft, but also don't fret too much about your hook tool damaging it. It is hardened. Just smooth off the surface of your hook tool where it can touch the input shaft and you should be ok.

Reinstall the seal with a mallet and a piece of pipe to seat it evenly.

Why buy when you can make your own. www.vintagebus.com has the local manufature VW workbook downloaded and it has the designs for "factory" tools that you can make at home. The seal puller is one of them. Item 270 or 273 or something like that.

After lots of reefing and a little cussing, it is out. Thanks Everyone.

BTW I used small allen wrenches, vice grips and a crow bar. I hate having to take a shower and go to the store in the middle of a project.

For future reference, the thin little bar with the flat rounded end that comes in some Toyota spare tool kits to remove the wheel covers also works well for removing that seal.

The new seal may not have a stop-lip on it so just stop flush with the case. A 1 1/2 pipe nipple works good as a putter inner tool.

putter inner tool. Very Happy That is just awesome.

I too have used the small allen wrenches, but the FLAPS hook and the homemade version are likely a better choice.

i always dab a little permetex gasket sealer on the outside of the seal.

vintagebus.com has the workshop tools for local manufacture book. it has the bluprints for the hook tool. easy to make and works awesome every time. i can have that seal out in 10 seconds

This tool is from a Toyota Corolla tool roll and is for prying the wheel cover off. But it also works well for removing the input shaft seal from my Beetle. It's thin enough to fit past the input shaft, and the round spoon-like end is tilted just right to enable gently prying the seal out of the hole by working it around the circumference. It takes a while but it comes off without damaging the metal.
