I finally decided to take the plunge and start taking my bug apart to get some paint on it. So far it looks good, I have some rust up by the passenger side wheel well and some on the drivers side. I dont know if it is all the way through yet. I have never tried something like this and have very little knowledge of some things ie: bodywork. I have read and read and read all I could. If I run into issues I sure I will get good advice here and from people I know. Here are some pics of the process so far not much, but a start. http://s122.photobucket.com/albums/o278/ryohey/ |

Looks solid. Take your time and do one thing at a time. Remember the old "measure twice and cut once" adage. Hold onto everything even if you think the replacement will fit or work without issues. Good luck. |

You've got a great base and are way ahead of the game. What are your plans?

I am just going to keep it stock for now. future plans include installing some dropped spindles with disc brakes and bumping up the engine to a 1776. Just took out some carpeting and the tarboard on passenger side. Floors look good except for a small hole in the back looks like it was put there not from rust. I found some rust on the inside fromt he fresh air box drain area and I think that the hole in the back was for water drainage for the pan. I just put up some pix.http://s122.photobucket.com/albums/o278/ryohey/ |

Im have gotten a little further with getting the interior gutted out. Im asking this question before I actually look, but can the rear heat ducts under the rear seat be taken off, is there a bolt or screw or are they welded to the body. Thanks |

They are welded in but I have heard of people cutting them out and welding a sort of patch panel over them. I believe it was an issue in hotvw's that shous a pan that they cut out the heater ducts so they could mount a roll bar. _________________ Josh

Well it has been a slow process. No painting being done this year, because as in my an earlier post Wifey spent the funds....lol. Oh well I am looking at as a blessing in disguise so I can do it right. I took the front suspension off and painted the torsion tubes and arms, getting new ball joints pressed in, new tierods, got the drop spindles and backing plates painted. I was thinking of changing the color of the car entirely, but the more I look at it Im thinking of keeping it the original diamond blue. I will post some pics tomorrow _________________ 69 bug restoration thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=387230&highlight= |

For curiosity's sake, does your car have a VIN plate in the lower left corner of the windshield and/or on the driver's B pillar, under the latch? The latter will include the build date punched out. _________________ Andy

I like your build tread .. I too am restoring a 69. I need to lift the body off and replace pans . Other than paint I'm basicly at the same place as you .. I have drop spindles and disk brakes to install. I also gutted the wiring but carfully marked everything .. The original loom was not in bad shape or hacked. Good job. |

Well winter is upon us. Never got it to the body guy this year. Thats fine gave me some time to do some other things. Reindexed the rear one inner notch. Now I am working on the underneath wire brushing and going to hit it with KBS rust sealer. Here are a few pics.
will update when this is done _________________ 69 bug restoration thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=387230&highlight= |

Did you use the whole " KBS Rust Stop System" or just the paint? I have a few areas on my 74 Vert that looks like your pans. Can I bypass the use of the KBS etching and just give the area a good wire wheel cleaning and just paint it? Do I need the KBS primer also. Thanks. _________________ VW Owner Beginner

I use thed etch, but not the metal ready. I just wired wheeled the junk off, cleaned as good as I could with simple green, etched it and painted the kbs on. seems like it is holding well. _________________ 69 bug restoration thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=387230&highlight= |
