I was in VanCafe on friday to pick up some parts and I saw a table full of shiny parts. I asked what they were and they handed me a beautiful BILLET thermostat housing that will fit a 2wd or syncro. I am really impressed at the amount of effort they have made to get parts out to market that have gone NLA. The housing is somewhat complex but it looks like a piece of art and the effort that they put into it paid off. If I still had a WBX powered van I would have bought one. I never understood why the OEM 2wd version was a plastic part anyways. Confused
Just thought I should pass on some info and pics for others.

it's on-site now and for $160 for housing only or $190 for housing with sensors and seals which one pretty much has to get as it requires different sensors http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/smartlist_680/thermostat_housing.html

It would use the same sensors as a Syncro or 1.9 uses. Seems like the brass Temp2 sensor is more reliable than the 2.1's so maybe that's an improvement.

Nice, and a good price. I wonder who is making that piece.

Great upgrade.
I have switched all my 2wd Vanagons over to the cast Syncro housing.
Works great.
Good piece of mind when running the waterboxer.
Many plastic housing have failed on vans I've worked on.

Just take a wirewheel to it, she'll look like new in ten minutes.

Yep. That's us. I have been a VW head for a long time. My dad had lots of VWs including two Vanagons. This has been a fun project.
My current VW is a Passat, but I feel like I'm getting sucked into the Vanagon world. I really want a Syncro now.

Yeah, it does get winnowed down under harsh conditions. You can do a lot to it but at a certain point there's not enough left to work with. We don't see a lot of that here where it's dry, but having come from wetter places I'm more than familiar with it.

My POR15 remark was jest; Paint Over Rust. What rust?

I can't believe no one makes one yet. Lost of home made solutions, but noting really slick.

I ordered up a thermostat housing kit and a lower tem thermostat today from VC... Razz
