I'd love to attend, but it may have to be in my (hopefully lifted) Subaru, as my westy will hopefully be sold by then (looking for a syncro hardtop). _________________ 89 Bluestar-2.5 Subaru Powered-RIP

There's almost 7 feet of space between the glove box & the rear seat back, so I plan on building a folding platform to make sleeping possible.
Of course, a tent could be fitted over the rear bed like some I have seen here on the Samba.

I to would be interested, depending on when. What I suggest is that those that are interested come up with a couple of places that might be suitable and unique. I think a centrally located area in the east might be good.
Questions:
1. How many syncros would possibly attend?
2. I would assume we need a place with an area for challenging 4 wheel drive options?
3. Do we want primitive camping or the availability of power?
4. Will this just be a get together or are we going to try and do a formal event?
5. How many days?
6. Can anyone else think of other options?
7. Name????
I vote for name change also, I like Westy de South Este, especially since I came up with it . I really do not care (see 7).

? Vana Est? Not all Vanagons are Westys. I can be self contained for several days. Central East works for me and priority of location should be to facilitate Syncro performance of course and perhaps one event challenging us 2WDers Heading east east sometime in June but can head south first. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Hey Chris,
Glad you chimed in.
With warmer weather approaching I think momentum is picking up again.
As we've discussed I have lots of thoughts on locations, activities, etc.
As I stated in this post: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=438825

I'd be happy to be a co-planner, board member, whatever as long as it's sort of regional for me. I'm happy to volunteer if it was in PA (SDME) but couldn't do much legwork on the planning side due to the distance.
I did the Outer Banks trip a couple weeks back....Epic!!!
Already planning another one for the spring if anyone wants to join in the fun. Eventually I'll post pics and a trip report.
My vote would be for Uwharrie (NC), Tellico (TN/NC), or somewhere in West Virginia.
Seems like there was a thread or post of some Syncro's in Uwharrie?? Maybe it was this: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?search...ults=posts |

I agree with Dan about attending established events. There are some great ones on the calendar every year.
However I wish for a Syncro oriented event on the right coast. Now that I finally have my Syncro going it seems SMDE isn't happening anymore?
Is it connected to that debate that's going on with the original? If not, I vote to resurrect it, change the name, whatever, and move it south of PA.
How about a "Southern Syncro Safari"?
I still think this would be a blast: http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/uwharrie/index.htm
NC Zoo, Gold mining, Town Creek Indian Mound, ORV trails, MTB trails, and lots of outdoor rec for the family. |
I usually make 4-5 organized VW campouts every year and there are plenty of bus/van/westy events all over so I'm focused on a Syncro oriented event with all others of course welcome. Depending on location I would try to make it to any Vanagon focused event, but I'm willing to travel farther for a Syncro event along the lines of SDM, SDME, Syncrofest, etc.
If any Syncronauts (or risk taking 2WD'ers) are in to surf fishing I'm currently planning my next trip to Cape Lookout. Right now it looks like Easter weekend so PM me for more details. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=440803&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
I still think two good locations are Uwharrie NF and maybe the George Washington NF.
Pisgah, the Smokies, Nantahala are all real nice for camping so those could be an option too but I need to research the OHV trails a little more. |

Perhaps East Coast is not a good area as everyone can only come from 3 directions. A bit more West means people can come from all four corners et al. I'd have the same feelings about NF if that means North Florida. I think a more Central location with priority going to a place with trails for Syncros. I guess if you want to name it specifically a Syncro event then us 2WDers would have no input. Like west side of West By God Virginia or the hills of Tn maybe. or southern Pa _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Correct, NF=National Forest.
I believe Tellico has been closed since last year.
GWNF is in God's country. Beautiful scenery, lots of history, plenty to see and do.
Not sure about the trail options though, it looks like it's mainly ATV trails in the NF.
However this place: http://www.anvilrockorvpark.com/index.htm would be a great option!
If I get time I'll call them tomorrow to get an idea of the trail difficulty. Hopefully it's not strictly hardcore rock crawling. |

Take a look at this. It is not in the mountains but it might be an option.
