Picked up my 74 thing. She'd been garaged for 20+ years. First order of business was to replace the unused 1982 tires. Then thanks to TheSamba, John Muir, and Rick Higgins (and sons) I was able to make my way through adjusting valves, setting timing, checking compression, new fuel lines, changing oil and adjusting brakes. Only a few choice words and skinned knuckles later and she's purring (or flatulating) like only a VW can.

HOWEVER, I encountered a mystery wire... Attached is a picture of the wire- it came out of harness behind air filter and the wire color is black. Any ideas?

Could be the power wire to the reverse light switch. The end in the photo would attach to a fuse holder which would in turn connect to a length of wire then to the positive side of the coil.

That would be my guess too. Sky, do your brake lights work?

BTW, welcome and congrats on your first post.

Thanks for the welcome to the forum- I appreciate the help and I'm sure I'll be asking plenty of 'special' questions (like where's the radiator cap in my thing?).

The brake lights work fine. The reverse lights don't work- I'll try a fused connection to the positive end of the ignition coil. (I'm assuming the back up light switch is a switch to ground...). Thanks

One more question- what amperage fuse would be safe for the in-line fuse for the reverse lights?

That should be 8 amp (white).

I meant to say back-up, not brake lights. Really.

Don't forget to check your blinker fluid while you're at it. Wink

At the very least get the winter air out of them before summer hits.
