It's really starting to look great Jim. When should I come over to measure for cabinets? Ray |

Thanks Ray, stop by anytime!
I'm excited to get started on the cabinetry, although the woodwork aspect of this project still seems a long way off.
The camper kit I got with it is similar, and might give you a rough idea for measuring purposes.
There are many photos of 58 westfalias found throughout this site, not sure how helpful they will be:
Thanks campinbox and dieselnut for posting these!
Back to metalwork:
The right side B-pillar is ugly:
I'm not sure this would ever look right trying to fix this area:

Yea, I bought a SO23 wash basin podium from him last September. Exchanged photos and alot of email interaction. Paid in full never was given a cost for shipping and never recieved the podium. I still email with no contact and call his cell which still has his voicemail No Contact returned. Recieved a email saying he's down on his luck home repo and relationship issues. And that was the end of it. I know he is/was respected in the VW community especially the Westfalia people but he flaked and turned deadbeat. Being that it's been almost a year I guess I should leave some negative feedback.
Sorry to highjack your thread. _________________ This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time! |

that is one awesome interior in that bus.
anyone care to comment on the difference in color between the refrigerator cabinet and the longwall cabinet in these pics?
that so-23 kit looked pretty good jim. nothing wrong with using it until you find the correct cabinetry. _________________ WANTED:

I don't think I'm going to find the correct cabinetry. I'd be lucky to find any junk pieces to use as templates.
Not to worry, Ray is an amazing woodworker. I want the cabinets to look right, if anyone can do that he can.
Back to the focus: Metal.
I got tired of dealing with this part so I took it off:
Then I welded up some dollies, and continued to blast:
I found all the metal (including the wheels) in my yard.
It feels good to be a hoarder
Thanks to everyone that posted in the dollie thread. |

Those are two different busses.
The interior in the second shot (with the propane fridge) was pieced together over time from several different sources. That would explain the color/stain variation. |

I am fitting the seat. I had to weld in a new section where the mounts will go, as it was just too rusty. Thanks Jeff for the mounts!
I also put the funky green front floor in to see how it fits...perfectly.
Where the floor meets the seat stand is too rusty to weld to as well.
So I spent some time making a piece. Not done yet but it's a start. Some people make this look so easy.

That new metal looks much better than the rusty Swiss cheese. |

Go Jim Go!!! Really making some nice progress. Glad you decided to go in this direction with the bus after so long. Are you coming down with Neil to Circle Yer Wagens in October??? We didn't get to drink enough beer with you at CTS.

Thanks Danny, As much fun as that sounds, I don't know if I can make it in October, its a busy month and I want to get as much buswork done as possible. I am tired of being a bus owner at VW events and not a bus DRIVER.
Anyway, I got the passenger side seat base nearly finished today, and started looking for more, noticed these parts under the old floor pieces:
I was amazed the horsehair? little pad survived under there!
Transfered them to the funky green floor:
As I was hammering on things, wrenches kept on falling out of the nose of this bus. I finally dug it all out, lots of nasty stuff but some cool stuff too:
Hazet wrenches worth big bucks, no doubt!
1968 Mobil oil change receipt yielded no info on previous owners. But a chance to win a new Plymouth Barracuda!
How did that survive down there for 42 years? |

Thank you!
The inspector had a look at the progress this week, frame rails got sanblasted all the way to the front of the bus.
After a little more cleaning, etch primer was applied.
I've been eyeing the rust bubbles on the side window openings. I thought I'd run a Scotch-Brite wheel over them and see how bad they were...not good.
So I started on them:
A couple of the inner panels were not acceptable either:
These are awesome.
Finished up with a look at the beam. Before taking it into the den, I thought I'd knock some of the grease off... 50 years worth, and it wasn't coming off with a brush, had to chop it off!
