I have now welded up over sixty small holes in the nose of this bus, all left from some old-school bodywork techniques. I have also been slowly hammering many dents out, while trying not to stretch the metal too much.

Maybe saving this nose is too big an effort. I have been looking at the less-than-great noses that are on the market for $1K or more, to me it seems this is worth trying to save.

I was thinking once the nose was done this project would be smooth sailing.
Then I took off the red paint from the rear corners for another surprise.

Great thread and epic resto.
If your going to try and repair that nose and rear corner, get yourself a shrinking disc if you havent got one already.

WOW what a great job on the bus!! I thought my bus had allot of work Very Happy
You are definitely spending the time and not cutting the corners.

As for the nose I say replace it...

If you fix the nose it will be the one place that will bug the crap out of you knowing that it probably should have been replaced. IT’s just my two cents.

That corner looks bad but not as bad as the corner on my old 67 deluxe.

I love your build thread and look back at it often to give me the extra will power to push forward.

I am really enjoying this thread. Great to see someone go to so much effort to save an early westy...

Thank you all for the encouragement. It has been slow going lately and I have nothing to blame except myself, and the cold garage working conditions.

Thanks Brett, I look at your thread for inspiration too, but I can't get over the wood chip work area, perhaps it is more forgiving than concrete. Think

I have been doing little projects (until my fingers go numb).

Scored this sand green crank start apron from the Holcombs garage, thank you Brian! Wink

It had been hacked for beetle tailpipes, and had rust.
I noticed it comes apart, which is handy for repairing!

I have been assembling all the parts that make up a '58 shift assembly, and I'm afraid I'm not done yet.
Thanks to Bill from FL for the shifter.

Thanks to Rich for the early front shift rod.

Thanks to Hazetguy for the M-spring, although there is no cutout for it on my shift plate.

You can see in that photo where I cut-and-spliced the earlier rod.
I got it all together and it shifts, although not super-smoothly.
I don't know if the plate is correct or will affect this.
Is this correct or should there be a different "link"?

The rear bushing (at the transmission) that is installed is the one that was on the bus when it came apart. I found another in my parts stash, is either correct?

Thank you to all that have posted on TheSamba, it is very helpful. Cool

Either rear shift bushing will work but the one in your hand is more "correct".

I stopped by Jim's yesterday and checked out the progress on the bus. Jim was busy cleaning the garage and taking advantage of a relatively warm day to have the garage door open, I think it was about 20 degrees?

Anyways, it is looking good buddy, getting it in primer really is fun and makes it look better! I think its time to start welding the gerson metal in.. you can't measure forever! Measure it up and weld that shit in.. We'll build a rotisserie and finish the underside later, just start putting it together, don't be skeered!

It looks awesome, we'll be camping in no time....

Not much to report lately. My wife is divorcing me, turns out all the funky green metal and other parts purchased for this bus will likely be consideted marital assets. I may lose it all so I haven't done more work. Buzz the bus cat / project inspector has been taken from me Sad . Saturation with alcohol also isn't helping get much done.

Sorry to hear this.

Sell the parts and metal cheap to a friend. I'm sure they'd donate it back to you.
