|
|
Hey all..
I recently picked up a 1970 bus.. after staying up all night waiting infront of bestbuy to get a a new cd player and front speakers.. so i found the 12v wire and hooked up the cd player then the speakers.. went to fire her up to see if she was working and i got nothing now.. no lights, no "trying" noise when i turn the key, nothing! i lost all power and i cant figure out what to do. I yanked the voltage regulator out and tryed putting a new one in and ended up frying some wires.. so i re-wired it and put the old regulator in and still no lights anywhere. I know my battery still has 12v but i cant get power anywhere!?! PLEASE HELP!! _________________ 1970 Bus

You knocked a wire loose or disconnected it at D, E1 or T2 on this diagram most likely.

so i checked the wiring and there is about a 6gauge (im guessing) but its bigger than the rest of the wires for sure. and it is hanging down right by the light switch so i pluged it into the light switch then my headlights came on but nothing else.. no dome light or engine turn over etc.. so i pulled that wire back out because i dont think it goes there. its red and white and pretty thick and i cant find it on the wiring diagram... anyone know this mystery wire??
by the way everything was running fine b4 i started to work on the new cd player... _________________ 1970 Bus

Sure you don't have a 71 bus? or a really late 70? The big red/white wire comes from the battery and goes to the fuse box. Please disconnect your battery before you play under the dash anymore, connect it up to test your work but don't work while it's connected.

Well, both diagrams show a fat red or red/white wire coming from the right of the pic (rear of bus), if it's red (most likely) it goes to terminal 30 on the headlight switch, then another shorter big red wire goes to the fuse box below fuse #2. If you have a later bus the red/white wire goes to the terminal under fuse #8. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

How much did you save? Aren't CD players kinda like 8-tracks now?

Is the stereo working? That's key here...

so its not fuse #8 that wire is already there... this red/white 6g is really short ending close to the E1 light switch but i cant figure out where it goes still..
the regulator got pulled because of my step-dad .. i even replaced it but it wasnt grounded correctly when i put it back in and i fried all the wires.. so i replaced all the wires in the engine bay already.. i know its something small under the dash it has to be!! _________________ 1970 Bus

it could be the fuse that is connected to the blue coil in the back, remember that fuse blew on me and nothing happened. had to jerry rig it and make a home made fuse, but later got the appropriate one _________________ 71' Stock 1600 DP |

Do not be so quick to give up.
I have a 59 beetle and last night I took off down the street and went dead at a stop sign and no power---zero---just like you stated. Everything worked fine beforehand with the exception of my light switch which would periodically need a little swivel left or right to come on lately.
Seems to be a link between the fuses/headlight switch/wire issue for me and according to the diagram above there is obviously a wire or something simple to be taken care.
I know these are apples/oranges but I am just pointing out that you can do this yourself with some patience and education via Samba research. Just keep trying and it can be figured out w/out resorting to $$$$ elsewhere. There are a lot of talented/wise people who can help.
Good luck and be safe. _________________ Do what you like and Like what you do! |

thanks.. but there are so many factors here.. so far ive spent 2 days on this problem and i need to get to work etc so i kind of dont have a choice.. its hard to depend on people on the web.. i have a repair manual with all the diagrams and everything but its difficult to know which wire is what if ur not a vw mechanic. esp when the wire isnt even on the diagram... lol _________________ 1970 Bus
