Posted: Fri Nov 27, 2009 10:21 pm Post subject: Best way to adjust heater cables and levers? |
|
|
Recently I replaced two of my heater cables, and since then I've had some trouble adjusting them.
Tomorrow I plan on loosening the barrel nuts and starting over so I can finally get them right. Here are the issues I'm having:
The left lever only reaches about 1/4 of the way down - it's so tight it won't go down any further. I used to be able to switch from the feet all the way to the defrost, but not anymore. It's always blowing on defrost now.
I did notice the "leg" for switching from front to passenger heat under the bus was pretty tight.
On the other hand, the right lever has almost full range, but it's too tight and won't stay down long enough to engage the fan. To use the fan, I need to hold it down.
If anyone around here has bothered to fix their heating system and can give me some good tips for setting up the heater cables in the best possible way, I'd greatly appreciate it. I plan to get up early in the morning and sort them out once and for all. |

speaking of heater cables, has anyone found a source for the shorter defrost cables on a late bay? Does GEMO or anyone still make them? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Nice try. My picture illustrating you as a cranky child in this thread was better

I'll try to add a useful response
To adjust the rears put the dash lever almost all the way down (stop approx 1/4" from the bottom) and adjust the barrel nuts to the full open position. If it's still springing back up tighten the friction nut on the lever pivots under the dash. The last 1/4" should take up the slack in the system and end up with both valves open fully.
As for the diverters you seem to have answered your own question, find out what's binding and lube it up. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My left heater clamp broke, so I went to the local VW shop (Painter's Grinding) and got a set of metal levers from an earlier bay.
I plan to swap these over to my assembly (even if they require some modification) and see how the cables behave after that. |

Thanks busdaddy! That helps a lot. I was asking my wife to keep the lever all the way down when I was under the bus, instead of giving some slack.
Do you know how much distance the lever for the diverter should travel? It only moves about an inch or so. |

I would assume all the way.

Not sure why you think I need to lighten up. I answered your question, found threads for you with solutions.
I just wanted a solution for my question without the thread getting derailed. Unfortunately, that happened anyway. |

Wasn't trying to hijack your thread.
My question was has anyone found a NEW source for the 75-79 defrost cables. GEMO makes the long ones and also a 16 mm shorter defrost one for the 1972-74 that can be made to work but it is also temp out of stock through VW Heritage. The part number on the correct 75-79 cable is 211-711-647/C. The 16 mm shorter one is 211-711-647/A. Supposedly it can be adapted. When the part goes bad it will cause the defroster either not to work or the lever to bind. There are several ways to use other cables or one can put in an early tube with a manual lever. I've found that some items whioch are out of stock are being made again depending on the demand so if one isn't available today it sometimes pays to wait 3 months and ask again.

I completely understand. Sorry if it didn't come off that way in my post. I was trying to be polite, not short, but it's tough to read through a computer screen.
I would like a replacement as well. Mine seems to be wearing out fast. I have not found them new though, and mostly see them go fast in classifieds or when a bus is wrecked.
I'm going outside for a bit before dinner now and getting those levers swapped out. Can't wait! The plastic ones are just trash. |
