I have started work on a Sand Shark that I found several years ago and wanted to post the progress. I have spent the last 6 months reading your build post and have gotten some great ideas. I do know I am going to use a Berrien frame since the 2 pans I've had, one with the car and another from a donor buggy that I bought, were in need of more work than I could do. The Berrien frame was the best choice for cost and time. My trans is ready to go and the 1600 dual port is getting done right now. I have spent the last several months patching holes in the body and today rebuilt the dash. I hope to keep posting and adding as the work progresses. Thanks for looking.

To me these old antique buggies are a part of history and I really enjoy seeing one come back to life. I think this is what inspires me to restore old vehicles because I just absolutely hate to see one die. Its like a part of history that is lost and will never come back.
To date I've restored;
78 silver anniversary pace car corvette
70 429 CJ Ranchero GT
74 Chevy Nova cop car
79 Ford F150 Custom Explorer which is my daily driver
65 mustang fastback and going through it again
my 68 VW Beecraft buggy that is in progress |

There were plenty of holes in the body but I have repaired them all including a spot on the rear deck that was filled with bondo and really thick aluminum foil!
hottarod...I too enjoy resurrecting old things. I have done plenty of Mustangs starting with my first, a 65 Fastback, and the last one was an 87 Notchback that my son and I built from a deer wrecked body and finished with a street rod my wife refused to ride in! I have fallen in love with this little buggy and can't wait to see the end result. |

I have finished patching all the holes in the body and gotten the broken dash rebuilt. Should have that in primer by weekend. I scored a set of aluminum dish mags from a local ad radio for $70. They were pretty filthy but one of them has cleaned up nicely. The motor should be together by this weekend have started getting together lights, speedo, and other parts. I'm hoping to have my trailing arms to the sandblaster soon. Just need to get the bearings out and the grease removed.
As soon as I can figure out how to add more pictures I will post them. In the mean time you can look in my gallery to see the build pictures. |

Here's a picture of the wheels and the painted engine case. Dropped off the oil pump and crank pulley tonite. The engines all together and looking good. Should have it home next weekend. The wheels are all polished and waiting for tires.

You must not be from around here lol Most of what people start with is in the same or worse condition then that ! We don't junk good old school buggy bodies we just slap more fiberglass on em _________________ The wheel may be turning but the hamster's dead !

I just got my wheels finished and got my rear tires. The rims are 14X10, chevy 5 lug and the only tire I could find was a BFG Radial T/A in 245/60/14 that would fit the rim. My front rims are 14X8 and I wll be running the T/A's in 215/60/14. That size is closest to the original VW tire size so I can run my original speedo.

Just picked up my engine. The rebuilder said it was a solid 1600 DP. He went thru it completely and we added an Engle 100 cam and rebulit everything stock with an updated valve job. Looking forward to hearing it run!

Always nice to see another Sandshark back out on the prowl! I love riding in mine
I have to say OUCH to that dash...holy crap!
Mine was pretty well cut up as well... so I covered it with metal plates and reworked it...
Keep us posted on the work!

Cujo3131, I like the looks of the SandShark as well. I have seen a few out there and they have nice lines.
I have been working on the dash for the past few days and it is ready for final sanding and little hole filling. I'm sure it will take as much work as I have into it. Others have inspired me, Dinubadave, to keep working at it and I really do like making something "broke" work again. Just something that provides a lot of satisfaction.

Looking good! Keep at it... Looks almost like mine.. however, mine does not have the slot in the dash for the steering wheel... my right side looks the same as the left... a flat panel. I simply cut a hole in that and ran my steering column thru it...
