Lacking the talent, persistence and patience of John, I've asked a friend to finish the restoration of this '51 11e. Early morning a few days ago, I packed her up and delivered her to his shop. This guy's got the ability, the enthusiasm, and the facilities to make this car whole again.
Pictures to follow as we go along...

This will be a brave and enticing journey Dr. Pete; I look forward to perusing the upcoming chapters...and of course; the completed results!
Carry on.

Well let's be careful there, if I were truly persistent, you wouldn't have this split now!! _________________ John Henry

Work has begun! Welding on pan. Parts are being ordered. Body will be squared up on rack, then metal replacement and rebuild will commence. We're off!

It's good to see things advancing; may the progress outpace your urge to see the completed results...and may it be fairly linear.
Thanks for the update Pete.
Carry on.

Mounted up and squared on the jig. Some "new" rust uncovered on the LF quarter panel. That's now removed. Replacement pieces ordered for sections that can't be salvaged...

Though a bit "gory" looking, I'd chalk up significant progress Pete.
Now I understand your 'extended' timeline.
Best luck as you go along with it.
No doubt there will be more "discoveries" along the way.

Almost like putting together the pieces of the puzzle, she starts to coming together. Heater channels, etc.

Where did you get your channels, A pillar bottoms and lower firewall? Virtanen or KlassicFab? _________________ Chris

Virtanen supplied the heater channels and a few other pieces in this project. Several restoration friends have told me their quality is top-dog (important to this retired veterinarian ). No argument here... _________________ Happy to be alive. Hey Dad, Mom, wish you were here to see all this.

More progress; now time to throw another "bone" to the doggy!
I'm looking forward to the eventual results.
Best, and see you @KP

My apologies for falling off the radar in this thread. Too many distractions, too many projects and not enough time to pull up pics. But...The 11e is getting closer to completion, and it's been an interesting journey. COVID really took its toll on the work being done (I'm sure that's the case with many other project cars). But things are moving ahead now. And the work on this car is top-dog, the attention to detail is incredible. Here are a couple pics of the car, after most of the body work, before and after the final prime. And 2 pics of the decklid and a door with their pearl gray color. I'll post more pics in the near future showing more paint, some smaller details, the upholstery, and the sunroof that makes this such a special VW. Getting excited here as we start to put it all together...

I can't even describe how happy these pics make me. I sold this split to Pete 5 years ago now. It has been a long road. We chat pretty much weekly. I am flying out to CA in a few weeks and will visit the shop where this split is. This car could not be in better hands. Pete is an AVID vintage VW enthusiast and this split WILL get completed and WILL get driven. Great progress and kudos to the shop that is doing this incredible work. _________________ John Henry
