the vanagon i just bought has a dual round headlight grill. at a quick glance you might say it's a south african grill.... except that both the headlight holes are 7"ers not 7 and 5 or whatever the s.a. ones are.
the whole van was a special order type of deal, a german guy in cali ordered it when he got to the states, had adventurewagen put a cabinet and folding bed in and it also has jailbars in the back window, alloy wheels like the ones in the german carat catalog that i found in the van. the van is blue and white. it's my fourth van and the coolest by far.
84 vanagon euro carat of some sort...i think |

The question would be what type of grill is it.
As for pictures I can try to post some when I get back home to my own computer. Until then here is some more info: grill was installed on the van in 1984-ish, both headlight holes are 7", there is no VW symbol in the middle of the grill, the inner two "headlights" are Hella's and the outers are regular headlights. |

Does it look pro or kinda homemade? I've seen this before but it didn't appear to be a product, more like well done custom. |

I think what you're looking at is an aftermarket grill by Projekt Zwo, a self-proclaimed German tuning company. They do grills, panels and all sorts of - im my opinion rather awful - stuff (see for yourself: http://www.projektzwo.de/. )
I've seen grills fitting your description, but I seem to be unable to find pictures online.
Would make sense though, since you write that the bus was ordered by a German ex-pat. Projekt Zwo mods are unbelievably popular in Germany.
regards,
Matt

Yes, that is an aftermarket grill. I can't remember who made them though. I can ask a German friend who might know.

There was a factory set up as well, it came as an option on the Tri-Star 16". It had cool headlight washers as well. I saw pics of one someplace, but since they where unobtainium, I quickly lost interest.
These where the Projektzwo duals, they where squareish:

That sweet upper grille is just begging for a S.A. wraparound lower grille.... _________________ Steve - Tampa Bay Area

all I know is that dual round one is pretty sweet... I want one. I had a parts van with an extra set of round lights and buckets. I was going to try to make something similar, but there isnt room on the drivers side for another headlight bucket. _________________ '85 Vanagon GL |

It was the upper grill I was referring to, the circles on the fog lights where already on the pic I lifted from a Spanish site.

If Projektzwo still made the upper grill set I would have gotten it instead of the SA grill, but the SA was all that was available without a screwdriver, a moonless night and some spare time in Deutchland. _________________ Geology with a Syncro rocks!

that's what I ment, the upper one I think is Projektzwo as well as the aux lights next to the turn signals. I'm pritty shure it is anyway. I had a German Projektzwo sales booklet here somewhere I got off ebay and I swear that grill is in there. when I got my trusk I spent months hunting grill info like a fiend...oh well...could be wrong though. that grill has to much rounded corners on the bars to me to be original VW.
looks alot more like Projektzwo where they made the tooling with a ball end cutter in a router on MDF, sorta like the round eye grill here only square eye. but again I could be wrong. I mean I just gave up looking and made my own. |

I tried to source one of these a while back. They're called Typhoon grilles (Taifun on German eBay). I don't recall the manufacturer. I had a difficult time finding someone to ship to the US so alas, no Typhoon for me. _________________ '85 Westy |

Perhaps. I think it looks quite nice the color it is. Different, anyway... _________________ Steve - Tampa Bay Area

yeah I tried to order a grill from the UK and they wouldn't ship either. ebay won't let me bid on most of German ebay. seems most Germans don't want to ship to the US and if they did, like the UK it'd be huge money. I can't justify it.
I would have bid on a set of those Projektzwo lower fog lights but ebay said I couldn't...which is silly cause those arn't that big or heavy. I've gotten larger boxes of stuff from China and Japan no problem. |
