Does someone have a wiring diagram for a 1973 std beetle generator? We have just overhauled my son's engine & put it back in.

The pictures he took prior to removal have been lost to a hard drive crash.

I need to know which pins the 4 wires coming out of the bundle go to.

My 73 Standard only has 3 wires going to the generator. Without pics and without markings, the only thing I can recommend is shooting continuity with each wire to the regulator.

As you face the back of the generator, the terminal on your left is D+ and its wire should have continuity with the bottom aft connector on the regulator. My reg as actually marked D+ at that reg connection so check for it on yours.

The wire that connects to the terminal on the right side of the gen (DF), should have continuity with the top aft connector on the regulator.

The small wire that goes to the screw on the body of the gen (D-), should have continuity with the body of the regulator.

Hope this helps.

Glen, Islandman,

Thanks guys!

I will try this out this PM 9(after work). I think the other wire is green. Could it have gone to the old Solex carb? We replaced it with a 2bbl Weber....

The Weber has an electric choke that we have hooked to the battery side of the coil.

I got the red/white, green & brown from your instructions, Thanks.

Now I am just trying to figure out the black. I thoght It might have gone to the solenoid on the old Solex, but both connections on it are blades, nor studs.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

The only other thing with a ring terminal that I can think of is the oil pressure switch. Maybe a PO installed non-stock wire? Is there an oil pressure gauge on the dash?

Is the oil pressure switch already hooked up?

Hook it up to a multimeter and see if its:

Putting out power with key off, key in run, key in start.

Does it have continuity to ground? With key on? Off?
