Today I helped a friend work on his dying heater in an 86. It made a screeching sound while running and low speed was dead. A new switch did not change anything so he pulled the dash and split the box. Last week he pulled out the dead rear A/C and saved the fans and resistors for heater repairs. Almost the same motor as the dash heater and similar resistor but with more speeds so we swapped both in. This gives his front heater 4 speeds now, after we also changed the switch to the 4 speed version and added an extra wire from it to the new resistor. High speed is still the same speed but there are more choice below it including a slower low speed.

The 4 speed switch is a standard VW car switch so low cost. The part number is 321 959 511 about $7 new. It exactly fits the dash hole and wiring connector.

Mark

The photos aren't great, but you can see the difference in the fan resistors.

I think I found a readily available and inexpensive solution to the NLA resistor issue. Film @ 11:00 (well pictures at least soon'.)

That is easy to fix. Just rewind it. I have 2 spares of the front but I'm still in to finding a simple resistor pack to replace the NLA part.
In the mean time ___Bone yard ALL VW, Audi,Sabb,
