Are there any records on how many were built in Europe? Does any one know if any were built in Ireland? Think i have tracked one down here, a 66, not seen any pictures, know it was first registered as a van, but was told it had windows!

From what I understand that was common. You could purchase the "van", and later have the windows opened up, and a used rear seat added. This was done to get around some sort of tax put on cars, versus "trucks" in some countries. It's also part of the reason why the UK got mostly "stripper" cars versus the USA getting fully loaded cars...import taxes.

Hello Gentlmens!
Some month ago I bought my 1972, VW 1600 Squareback.
Now I started to restorate it.
I have some questions about options, can You help me?
I recived birth certificate for my Type 3, and it says that it is « Squareback-Delivery van» with option M 266, that cannot be identified. Also, there is no such options as M264 or M265. So I can’t understand how it was looks in 1972.
Can anybody says what M266 is? (and A 41, M 072).
Was it Panel Van or it had windows like now?

P.s. Sorry about my English, didn’t practice for a long time.

It's actually a '73 model built from August '72 w/1 year only 3.88 high speed 'freeway flyer' ring & pinion transmission!

Your English is fine, better than some who speak it everyday. Cool
Yup, it's actually a 73 Panel van. Meaning it's supposed to have steel panels in place of the glass.

You'd have to check the trans number to see if you actually got the 3.88:1 trans or not, as panel vans were geared more for work, rather than pleasure. Some even came with a swing axle trans.
Your project looks like a very interesting one though, and should be fun to watch as you move along with it. Cool

Mike Fisher, Thanks Mike!

Bobnotch, Nice to read it, thank You! Embarassed
I guess it would be intresting for me too Cool
First of all, i noticed that it is easier to find new parts for Type3, than for my 1979, mk1 Golf https://www.drive2.ru/r/volkswagen/golf/997630/, that I restored some years ago.

In Norway we had some late cars like this...

No backseat and with an 40 cm high metal "wall" behind the front seats
