EYETZR..... I wanted to have a car that never looks the same as everyone else with subtle differences that would make you need to see a stock car to see the differences. It also would look different if you saw it again, I have a few different types of wheels that give the car a different look. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Are there any records on how many were built in Europe? Does any one know if any were built in Ireland? Think i have tracked one down here, a 66, not seen any pictures, know it was first registered as a van, but was told it had windows! |
From what I understand that was common. You could purchase the "van", and later have the windows opened up, and a used rear seat added. This was done to get around some sort of tax put on cars, versus "trucks" in some countries. It's also part of the reason why the UK got mostly "stripper" cars versus the USA getting fully loaded cars...import taxes. |
I know this comment above was made by Bobnotch over 2 years ago, but I thought i would just confirm the situation regarding rear windows and rear seats in the UK in the 1960's and 1970's. It was an odd situation where is you bought a car (van) without rear side windows, you didn't pay what was then known as "Purchase Tax" on that car, and the saving was considerable. As a result you see lots of cars sold in the UK from this era with no side windows - Ford Escort vans, the VW Type 3, Bedfords, and even Trotter's Reliant 3 wheeler van from the TV programme "Only Fools and Horses" - Del Boy would NEVER have paid more than he had to !!!
It was the same with the rear seat - With no rear seat when purchased, it added to the "commercial" aspect of the vehicle and the reduced tax payable.
Buying a van without windows and then putting some in was a common lurk, but if you were stopped by the cops, they would get you for it and make you pay the tax !!! Plus a fine for "cheating". (Don't ask me how I know !!!)
In fact, the law today even confirms the reduced VAT (as the tax is now called) if there is no rear window.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-on-motoring-expenses-notice-70064
I am wondering if that model pictured with the raised barrier behind the seats could be linked to this ? If there was no rear seat in the car, a higher barrier to protect the driver from cargo carried in the rear is logical - A forerunner of the cargo barriers that are now compulsorily fitted to most commercial vehicles and 4WDs to stop cargo flying around.
Just a thought.

The higher baracade was one version. There have been a few variations. I did a take on the jail bar style. If you look at the start of this thread, Aaron our panel van guru has laid out a few variations as well as the tax issue. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

They did that over here too.Not really sure they're done throwing salt around yet. Might be a little warmer than usual, but that doesn't mean much to me until next month. I only say that, as I've seen it snow as late as mid-May. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Maybe so, but there's a lot of car there to start with. And yes, I've worked with less, a lot less. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
