Hi all i have been lurking around lately but have finally found the time to make a thread.

I picked up a 71 squareback about 4 weeks ago. Loved it for the first week but then i noticed the oil was smelling of petrol and a loud noise started from the engine. So i took it off the road.

I changed the oil and 6 days later it was jet black and again smelled of petrol even though i had not driven the car. Pulled out the fuel pump and it appeared to be leaking from the bottom. Replaced the fuel pump but it won't start. Noticed there was no fuel getting to the fuel filter so that's next on the list.

the car itself has had a number of poor repairs and a paint job by the PO. but i really dig it regardless.

Looking forward to getting involved in a new automotive community and thank you in advance for answering any silly questions i have.

post a picture of the engine so we can see what you're working with.
the fuel pump lines may be reversed
the fuel filter in the engine bay is already a no-no.

I thought so as well Mike but the fuel was flowing when i removed the filter.

this was how it looked. but i was able to blow through it.

Clamp, paint brush and pen are on the tank line, where the filter was.

I haven't been able to get a fuel filter yet so can't test it.

Considering getting the Eva restos Fuel filter gearbox mount kit. Anybody used one.

What W1K1 was saying was don't put a fuel filter in the engine bay - well known source of major fires when they leak.
Fuel filter should be in the pipe under the fuel tank, up front, where if it leaks, it does no damage to your car.
Have a new solid line across your engine.

Yeah got that. that's why i was asking if anybody had used the bracket from Eva restos that relocates the fuel filter to beside the gearbox.

I will leave it where it is for now to diagnose the issue. depending on the problem i will either move it to beside the gear box or if the pump is bad replace the pump with an electric one and move the filter to the front.

So i have replaced the filter and fuel flowed through it. Tried to start the car and nothing.

I got a new push rod when i got the pump and it is the same length as the one that was there. 108mm

The original fuel pump lever sit's lower in the body of the pump then the new pump does. neither stick out of the bottom of the pump. will get pics tonight.

My thinking is that this would reduce the volume the pump is producing.

Yes it does. There's a short and long pump rod. Your new pump needs the longer rod if the foot is more recessed inside.

On second look- it looks like the new pump might be defective and the foot isn't returning.

It's got to be one or the other.

I am using the 108mm rod which from what i have been told is the longer rod.
Soo you could be onto something and i might need a new pump.

Been busy,

Rebuilt the carbs, Moved the fuel filter next to the gearbox, fixed a number of fuel leaks in the process. Onto the second new fuel pump and it works like a charm. And new spark plugs.

Engine is still making a rattle noise but it seems to drive strong.

Next stop will be to check the fan shroud bolts as suggested in another post. Will add a video when i get a chance.

Felt great to drive it again.

Congrats on fixing your not running issues. I couldn't comment on the fuel filter bracket, as I'd never heard of the company you listed above.
I'd probably check the valve clearances, since you're looking for an engine noise.

Yeah, and try the "redneck stethoscope" trick of sticking a hose in your ear and moving the other end around the engine to locate the noise source. Works great!

Alright. it has been a while.

I followed Bobnotch and did the valve clearance as well as ignition condenser and dizzy cap. This made the car run perfect when warm.

But highlighted the noise and after a cold morning started blowing blue smoke.

So i pulled the engine out and sent it off to a local VW specialist. The engine was found to have busted bearings and needing new rings, expected with the blue smoke.

A full rebuild with some hotting up was organised Performance heads, cam, carbs, exhaust ect but still a cruiser.
The machine shop ended up going bust and it took some time to get the case back, then get it to another machine shop. The case came back some time last year and is hopefully nearing completion with the specialist.
This situation entangled a number of locals engines and gearboxes.

a few months ago i got under the car for unknown reasons and noticed surface rust particularly around the rear. poking around a bit i noticed the top side of the subframe had a lot of surface rust on it. so i pulled the gearbox and subframe.

I will be replacing all bushings, and brake lines. Though i am thinking i will not pull apart the drums and bearings yet as they where working fine and i think they could be addressed while on the car at a future date.

Pictures to come once the computer lets me loads them up. I do have a new phone so maybe that's stopping them.

Thank you as always for the advice and hopefully i don't need to pause the build again.
