I think this is pretty cool myself. Cool enough that it got a feature on the automotive website that myself and a couple of friends run (find the article here: http://streetshots-streetshots.blogspot.com/2010/01/extremely-rare-steel-bodied-dune-buggy.html), and cool enough that it might find its way to the Great Grimey Collection with a rotisserie restoration, some lowback VW bug seats in black vinyl and stock VW wide-five wheels with blank (no VW logo) hubcaps.

He's lowered the opening bid. I think it has some great lines, with the long hood and front fenders and chopped off rear end. I think a two tone paint job would look great on it. |

I'd like to have a garbage truck too, but I'd rather have the VWeep than a Thing. |

First car I ever drove......
I know it's ugly, but man, if I could find this old thing I would buy it in a heartbeat. I still remember when "daddy let me drive"

The body on my 65 Baja is rusted soo bad, I am considering doing something like that with it.
It has a solid floor pan and running gear. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

just a backyard job...looks similar to a sportster but with a back seat and a enclosed engine compartment. We sold it in 1983 for 100 bucks!!!! I bet i could build another exact replica just from memory. At 9 years old, that car was everything to me, got me hooked on Vw's and forever turned me into a car freak. _________________ 62 vert

Do not want to put much money in it. Something I can fabricate myself.
I have a MIG and a stick welder. And, I have access to a complete machine shop. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

The story when this steel Manx type pic was posted was that it pre-dated the Manx...I recon it was more like something grandpa knocked together in the shed 'cause they coundn't aford a fiberglass kit or Manxes never made it as far as the Appalacians...

Maybe, I am interested to see what the market will set the price at......it has been relisted on eBay. Here is the link.
The auction started at 99 cents, and has already skyrocketed up to $100.
New information, direct from the listing...... "IT WAS MADE BY NATIONAL REFUSE COMPANY, FULL STEEL BODY,, NOT FIBERGLASS THIS WAS ONLY MADE FOR 2 YEARS, ITS SUPER RARE, ITS NOT A HOME BUILT BODY IT WAS MASS PRODUCED GOOGLE THE VW AND SEE WHAT YOU GET I HAVE ONLY FOUND ONE. AND IT WAS NOT FOR SALE. THIS WAS MADE BY THE SAME COMPANY THAT BUILT A FEW ITEMS FOR THE GOVERNMENT, THIS IS NOT THE JEEP VERSION. I SEE TONS OF PEOPLE ARE ON SAMBA LAUGHING AT THIS POSTING, THIS IS A SUPER RARE ITEM, IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS YOUR NOT ALONE, ONLY ONE EMAIL OUT OF 23 EMAILS KNEW WHAT I HAD. THIS IS A FULL HEAVY DUTY STEEL BODY.... THANKS"

I still think it has great lines with the long slanting hood and front fenders. The rear end looks a lot like a WW2 Dodge Command Car. I just wish it was made of aluminum sheet rather than steel.
The ebay comment about people on the Samba lauging at it is slanted too. Reading back through this thread I can really only find one individual who is critical of the design(the same guy sells hand grenades as shift knobs!!).
What people were critical of was someone buying something that was listed at a low price on the Samba and then immediately attempting to make a 1,000% profit on ebay.

It just went for $760. I hope the new owner plans on fixing and driving it rather than hauling it to Barrett Jackson. |

The seller probably made out ok, certainly no quick 10X return on his cash however. It was originally for sale on Craigs list for $600, he may have negotiated that down a bit. He pulled the classic slotted Mags off of it and probably cleared some pocket cash after Ebay fees as well.
I hope the new owner is a Samba member and posts photos of the rebuild. I'd like to see what it will become, could be pretty cool. _________________ Gary

I'd be interested in what that "heavy duty steel body" weighed. All those flat surfaces indicate fairly heavy gauge material and I'll bet it weighed more than the beetle body it replaced. |

One of the ebay pictures showed it has coil-over helper springs in the back. It probably actually needs them. |
