You may want to start a new thread with an appropriate title.. That way you'll pull in more attention, more advice.
Frankly, the noise could be anything. I have a new knock/clunk right now.. It started a few months a go, and I have yet to locate the source.
Lots of possible sources for it.
Can be very frustrating to fix.

Picture taken last night I presume? Wifey went to post the rainbow pic to Facebook and it seems half of town beat her to it.
And, man, the more you post the more "goodies" I learn your van has. I would really like to go for a ride in it sometime to get a feel for how the suspension and TBD work. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

Still needs a little lift and many other mods ( just purchased this van last month) but have the 14" BFG AT's / Bilsteins /Safari Racks( not pictured) / ....and the all important 2WD /Pre logos......one over landing camp trip in so far....no issues tackling the backroads in BC but much still to upgrade!

Yeah that rainbow was insane. I don't remember seeing one quite so intense. The double was complete, too. The intense colors along with the dark background was stunning. People were pulling off the roads everywhere to get out and gawk and take photos. Good times!
And by BRC sticker, do you mean Bozeman Reel? You betcha! _________________ 1990 Syncro 16" DoppleKabine 2.1 DJ 112i

I've posted my van setup before, but some photos seem to capture stance and feeling more than others. I like these.

I love this thread. Really sets the bar for those of us who have "average" 2WD Westy's.
The PO rebuilt the suspension and brakes on my 83.5. Polyurethane and Bilstein HD's. The springs were replaced, but I do not know what they are. They're nice and shiny and the hub to fender lip is right at 17" on all four corners. This suggests to me that there is no lift. General Grabbers for rubber.
But, I'm still calling it a "Pre-runner". It sure gets me where I need to go. But, I gotta tell you guys, there are some really nice setups on here. The only (and I mean ONLY) reasons I hesitate to spend some money are that:
a) it works so danged well now, and...
b) it already barely fits into the garage. Another half an inch and it will not.

Not sure when/if the Stormtrooper van crossed into pre-runner status, but my latest trout safari in Idaho proved something to me. It started as Carat, with extra, extra low springs and old shocks, I'm now running Moogs/konis upfront and westy springs in the rear with 1" spacers plus Gabriel air-adjust shocks. General Grabber AT tires, big brakes, many new bushings, and a healthy 2.2 WBX.
I just did a couple things with the van that would not have been possible before.
1. Drove a long, suposedly-4wd-only bad road (big rocks, dips, tracks and drainages), at a much higher speed than would've been possible in the past. The Koni/moog set up really shined in these conditions. I'm saying this as someone who has been abusing vans and busses off-road for more than 20 years.
2. I had to repeatedly cross a steep muddy ditch with trailer. This was a ditch I couldn't cross before I lifted the van and got the right tires/wheels. Now it was no problem, even pulling a trailer loaded with 1000+lbs of wood. Wouldn't have considered this with my old set up. I might even stop contemplating an LSD for a while.
Pre-runner? Who knows, not the most gnarly looking van out there but man it is getting capable. Almost as good as my 77 bus.

Nice Wastermasters! Or should I say Big Sky Inflatables now. My old neighbor invented those here in Missoula MT. I have one of the original ones but upgraded the oar mounts. Freaking love those things, quality watercraft that can go where only most white water kayaks can go. So nimble and durable, great fishing vessels |

[quote="jetpoweredmonkey"]I'm going to copycat Christopher's tasty hardtop - here are my junkyard MBZ 16x7 ET37 steelies just back from the powdercoater. Ended up at about $110 each, all said and done - not too bad. All but one had never been mounted.
I know this is a bit old but... what model/year do those 16x7 steelies come from? I have a set of Audi 5000 rims 15",but they don't do it for me. Those Steelies would look great in black, w/chrome lugnuts _________________ 86' Wolfsburg weekender 2.1, 4spd, , merian brown |

Hey Adv Rider,
If you're looking for black steelies with chrome lugnuts, have you checked out GoWesty's offering? Ready to go off the shelf and built to work with their big brake offering.

If I didn't already have 16" steel Mefros, I would be considering the GoWesty wheels when they release the silver version. _________________ 1986 Westfalia Weekender

I know this is beat to death elsewhere, but, you are my peeps. And so it goes.
Stock 2.1, runs great. Wanting to beef out my rubber a little. I am thinking 215/70R15 Geo's but am worried about the larger diameter and stock powerband. Who has bigger tires and a stock engine and sees no problems? |

I don't know why this is hard to understand..
there's no problems
you just get less useable HP and go slower.
spend more time in 3rd it's your new 4th.
if you want to run larger tires with a stock engine, you just have to change 1 of these 3 things: gearing, horse power or driving style (expectations)
no problem
for comparison go ride your multi speed bike and leave it in the front sprocket's middle gears. for ALL terrain and acceleration needs (merging/intersection crossings) it'll go, just a little slower and more strain on the powerplant (your legs)
