|
|
Anyone remember the dune buggy races that used to happen on Sundays in the sand pit next to the town dump (I recall up a road on the north side of Route 28, toward the western end of town)? My dad used to take me there as a kid (late '60s or early '70s time period, I think) and it was an exciting scene. Would love to hear from anyone with any background, old pictures, old race programs, etc..
My folks used to have a cottage in Chatham (long since sold), and so we had the opportunity to be up there often at various times of the year. Anyway, just got to thinking about those old Chatham dune buggy races, didn't find any mentions of them anywhere on the internet, and am trying to figure out ways to possibly connect with anyone who remembers them...
Many thanks! _________________ Stock Steve

That's exactly right, herbie91.
There's a kids picture book that I have that contains many pictures from the Chatham dune buggy racing scene there--really brings back some memories.
I will make a point of finding my copy of the book and posting the title and author here. When I bought my most recent copy, I recall a few used copies still kicking around out there... _________________ Stock Steve

There was also the old MBBA (Massachusetts Beach Buggy Association) that used to roam the dunes in mid-fifties sedans and Divco milk trucks fitted with widened rims and flotation or airplane tires. Right around the corner from my house is a '49 Chevy sedan with opened wheels wells, wide rims, flat flotation tires, a rusted exhaust stack, a ladder on the side, a wooden platform on the roof, and an MBBA decal on both cracked rear quarter windows.
It brings back memories of Chatham, Provincetown, Land's End, and the National Seashore back when. They even used to give buggy rides over the dunes starting out of the parking lot in Provincetown center . . . different times. |

Ok, the book is called "dune buggies," by Gary Gladstone, published by JB Lippincott Company, copyright 1972.
Apparently 5 used copies currently available thru Amazon:

The cover of the Gladstone book shown on this page is not the same cover as my copy: http://www.freewebs.com/buggiesbooks/
EDIT: Holy smokes, I just realized I posted this same info back in March of '08...must be getting old...

"Hey TC, how're you doing?"
Great ! ! Sold all of the Ghias and Ghia parts, sold the 356SC and just about have the 356 Pre-A sold, bought a tiny Fial 600 for a VW engine conversion and picked up a nice tube VW frame sand rail.
Shifting gears a bit, but still VW. See you at the CVWA dust-off this Spring?

Glad to hear you're staying busy, with a proper VW flavor.
Not too many VW changes at this end--though did sell my summer driver '68 Bug this past summer, and am now on the lookout for a nice Ghia Convertible to replace it with (few & far between, I know--but I have no time limit for finding what I want, so no biggie).
God-willing, we'll be at the Dust Off 2010. I made it there this year for the first time in many years--had a fun time. They get a nice turnout of cars and people. _________________ Stock Steve
