|

I really big thank you to Karl at Westy Ventures for supplying a quality adaptor plate which I finally installed today. This plate allows the use of a VW tdi starter SR0408X which is a Bosch gear-reduction type starter.
The instructions are clear, and install, including the minor modifications for the syncro, with rear difflock, took three hours.
Having cleaned up, I started the van up, and I've been grinning ear to ear, ever since, totally impressed the way it sounds and how well it spins the engine.
Im preparing for a Xmas Baja trip, this certainly gives me more confidence. Thank you Karl.
Paul in Emeryville. |

I've had this pretty starter adapter part sitting on the desk for a year. I need to find a starter and install it already. |

VW tdi starter SR0408X |
I have one of these that quit working and I didn't get around to returning it for the core so if you know how to rebuild/fix it it is yours for the cost of shipping.
Send me a PM.

Thanks for posting this!
I was just now searching the SVXVanagon group on what starter I could use for my svx conversion and found out about this starter adapter, but couldn't find out what starter I could use with it.

This is THE only way you should do an svx conversion. I went through several starters when I first finished my svx conversoin. I then bought karl's adapter and a bosch TDI starter, and NO problems since. That was about 2 years ago now. It sounds awesome. Even on cold, cold mornings that thing spins over the svx awesome. And yes, that adapter is perfect. Great product, great instructions, great guy. And its a great price! Nothing sucks more than getting stuck somewhere with a dead starter, especially if you cant push start it. _________________ "go slower, go lower!!!"

I've got Karl's starter adapter on my SVX conversion.
Two years of trouble free service, I love it. Other than me using the wrong spade connector on the starter when I first installed it, but that's another story. The TDI starter and adapter are perfect for this application.
BTW, I've also got a dead TDI "core" starter laying around if anyone needs one. Somebody sent it to me free and I paid for shipping, so I'd be happy to "ship" it forward in the same spirit. If you need it contact me and it's yours if you pay shipping.

I beleive the 409x is just the remanufactured part number for the 408x. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Thanks |

i've seen one link (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=2373805&postcount=518) that states there is an insignificant power difference between the two, and other links that back up the rebuilt theory.
(i also asked karl at westy ventures, he said he hasn't personally used the 0409X but has heard from others that it might be much the same.)

|
|
I purchased the conversion plate from Westy Ventures for my 86 Syncro Vanaong I should say that I am sure the problem is on my end but the starter ( SR0408X) will not fit, it appears to be too long w/ plate. Has anyone else had this issue?
thanks |

Since it is too long, what is it hitting? If you are hitting the locker actuator bracket there are instructions on his site on what needs to be done.
Got a picture? |

It's in , as I suspected the issue was the installer ( me ). I had to re-route the harness to fit. The solenoid is kinda close to tank so I will be keeping an eye on it to see if it wears on the plastic. The westy ventures part is well made and I am hoping that it will be a long term fix for hot start issues.
thanks |

No, only for conversions using the waterboxer bell housing. For the diesel bell housing and flywheel, there is already the stock diesel van gear-reduction starter that works fine. |

The tdi starter solved my heat soak starter issue. When i took the old starter out, its looks to be the original 1980 starter so im glad it last for this long. The tdi starter seems to start the van faster(with more than double the power compare to the stock) and no hot start issue. The hardest part is getting the top nut out. i had to grind some metal off the starter since the adapter plate nut interfere with starter. Well worth my $150 total, probably could got the tdi starter cheaper if went to a dismantle yard but got a used 03 jetta tdi starter from LKQ website for $75. _________________ 1980 2.8LV6 Fiero ASI/Riviera Vanagon

Karl,
I was trying to find that answer and was lead to this post.
Would that starter p/n be SR28X?
Thanks!
