While moving some parts around, I noticed some wire tube clamps have a sheet metal type of screw and some have a machine screw going through a welded on threaded piece. When did the machine screw method stop?

IIRC one (bolts) is for 25HP and the other (screws) for 36HP. There was a discussion about this very thing in this forum recently

Edited to correct info

Here's a thread I found searching on 25hp clamp
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=273710

I'm pretty sure early 54s would still use that clamp as 54s typically have those welded-on tabs in other engine tin locations.

Bolts is early, screws is late. I agree the changeover was probably in '53 or '54. Don't recall seeing it in PR...

comparison pics for future reference.
25hp on left, 36hp on right. 25hp are larger.
25hp uses 6mm weld nuts and machine screws. a DIN #85 6x15 slotted pan head screw is the closest available.
36hp use tapping sheet metal screws. a DIN 7971C 4.8x13 pan head screw is the closest available.
