Thanks Ant, I've had it way to long it seems like with very little progress. Hopefully that will change soon though, few other things that have been in the way are thinning out. Planning on taking the bus out and cleaning up this weekend and then can work out of it again.

I am gonna donate a tire to help things along. John is a great guy he will probably keep this bus all his life and cruise the states in it with the family.

What an update about time!

So got out there last night and just felt good from the start. Got my measuring done marked my door and atleast got the door skin tacked on. It was a great fit, although there are some spots I need to finish hammering out. Got the inner brace fitted as well but didn't weld or tack it on yet. Might happen this weekend. Either way it was nice to see some progress and to shed some more rust off the bus.

Did find some bondo, I though thats what the odd white spot on the cargo door might have been, so looks the doors got damaged at some time in its life and was repaired. Its not bad though, and with the brace cut off I think I can hammer out 90 percent of it. Even though at the thickest it has only been 1/8" or less.

Get a shrinking disc instead! Hammering is so much harder to get a good result.

I plan on getting one, as a matter of fact I've had some money in paypal and been wondering what I need next thats it. Luckly though this one isn't bad, its not a warped area its a area where it was bent slightly. Not even from shipping I sort put something heavy on it Confused Its only bent in about 1/8", but with slapping spoon I have it almost to nothing. I just want to get it as close as I can before I weld in the brace.

Put a guide coat on it and sanded it down, followed by some hammering. Getting it alot closer, I'm tired of using any filler it cost to much. So going to keep working this till its super close. Shrinking disc is on the way already, and I should have it hammered about 90% of the way tonight. Goal is to have this one done if a few weeks and on to the other side.

Going to also go ahead and strip the filler that is on the door. Its where ever the sorta white looking area is. See if I can get it any closer than it is.

Thanks! I happy to get out there more now, I have been working more on this door skin. It was bent worse than I thought it was (my fault not KF). Moral of the story keep your sheet metal up out of the way of your knees.. I'm expecting my shrinking disc in today so I can hopefully this weekend get it 100% done weld in the inner brace and on to the other side.

Not a huge amount of progress, but progress is progress. I have the cargo door as good as its going to get just need to finish welding it up and metal finishing it.

The inner door frame is tacked in as is the rod guide. That was some sorta pain in the but to get correct. I do still have some inner frame issues but nothing hard to fix.

Just doesn't line up right.

Decided I wanted to get the front beam out of the way. I was planning on leaving the front and just driving it, but its to rusty for me to just leave it for another date.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Before it was all said and done bet there was 5 pounds of dirt and crap that fell off the spindles and arms. It was a mess...

I did have some help from one of my little ones, who after getting on something to keep her clean. She picked up this hammer and started to hit the nose of the bus lol. Stopped her in time and redirected that hammer to the drum where no harm could be done.

I had a time getting all of the rusty shift rod and cables loose before dropping the beam. I did get it done though and made use of the power cleaner at work.

Got the spindles cleaned up as well. Set it all aside to start the next little project for a buddy. Some rollers will work great for moving the bus around while I get the wheels sandblasted and painted. Not to mention will be easier to work on the front end.

So I had to make a template for the holes to mount the plates to the frame. Came up with this idea.

Hung the paper with a magnet and used a ball hammer to knock out where the holes would go.

Also saw something new to me. There was a shim behind the beam on the front.

Looks like it has been there the life of the bus. Just never noticed one of these before.

Took the plates to my buddies and drilled them out now I just need to weld them together. After that its off to pull the transaxle and make the roller for the back. Will be nice to take the transaxle to work to clean it off as well. Then back to the metal work, just have to do what I can right now. Can't really hammer around to much out there after kids go to sleep.

Well figured I would add what little I have done to this bus. Finished up the front casters, made the dual purpose. They can be used as bolt on jackstands or bolt the wheels to them and instant rollers.

I also dropped the transaxle, I know the guy always had this bus worked on at the dealer. As I said my neighbor used to work at the dealer were this bus was purchased and remembers it and the owner. Looks like he always used oe parts, the shocks I took off are still good and have vw stamped right onto them.

Also looks like when the bus was painted they had the frame horn bolts in without the transaxle cradle to keep paint from getting into the threaded holes. Never noticed this on other buses/beetles I have worked on.

Dropped the transaxle as well, this was interesting since I broke my wrist few days earlier. I was glad I got a water proof cast had to wash it after this job. I scraped what seemed like over 5 pounds of dirt and build up off this thing. I still need to get it out of garage and clean it, not to mention build the rear casters for the bus so I can get it out of the shop and clean off the front mount area.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

After that I plan on getting back to the metal working. I want to get lots done this winter but after breaking my wrist starting off slow.
