i have what looks like a vacuum line (? white plastic tubing with black rubber sheath) disconnected in my 1986 syncro vanagon engine bay. it doesn't look to be fuel system related based on the diagram on the black box in the engine bay or in the bentley. any help identifying this is appreciated!

It looks as if it was the transmission vent line. The L fitting has broken off. It does get brittle. It should go into the .50¢ piece sized hole in the bell housing, the is a big rubber grommet that fills the hole with a small hole in the middle the end of the plastic L went into.

even with the heads up as to what i'm looking at, i'm still at a loss to find information about it in the bentley ...

now i'm curious, what is the damage exposure while driving like this? filth in to the transmission through the .50 grommet? and, furthermore, is this a simple FLAPS fix?

Hey youremyboyblue,

Those plastic lines are Syncro only vent lines from your front differential,
transmission, and bell housing. Their purpose is to provide atmospheric venting from these units which are sealed against water and mud. Without these vents the pressure difference between inside/outside would blow the seals.
If you cannot find a replacement L fitting for the top of the bell housing it's no big deal unless you want to go mud whooping, then water and crap would get into the bell housing.
You can always fab something to work (rubber stopper with hole for plastic line)

youremyboyblue,

Here is a pic of what the original vent plug looks like:

The pic is of my Zetec motor, so the location is different than yours.

youremyboyblue,

you are not gonna blow anything. Like I said, you can leave it the way it is unless you wanna go driving through deep puddles (2-3ft)

The place where the plug goes is that .50 cent sized hole at the top of the bell housing. You can see it in the photo you posted (Right hand middle of your photo)

i think what is throwing me is that i'm missing the rubber grommet; thus, the rusting. any idea on how to determine a replacement part #?

Go to your pic you sent us and you will see the 50 cent hole behind the #3 intake runner. The hole is in the case just below the engine/trans bolt. You can't miss it. No harm done to leave it as is, it only vents the trans.
