Do the bonnets change between the oval and the first big windows? or are the big window bonnets the same as the 61 - 63?
Also if anyone could show me a correct bonnet handle for a 56 I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance. |

I believe there are more differences than just the ribs in the photo that I have posted..It does have:
4 Tab Slots
Hood Badge Slots
Ribs on each side of the lower corners of the hood..
I dont know about the third bolt for the hood prop..
1956 Hood Bonnet
1958 Hood Bonnet (Notice the changes again in the lower corner)
Early Hood Bonnet (Notice Difference)

Thanks for the replies. So does this mean that the only difference between a 57 - 61 and a 61 - 63 bonnet is that the later has a 3 pin VW badge instead of the earlier 4 slot one? |

58-60: 4 tab VW emblem and the single wide pressing for the hinges.
61- early 63: 3 pin badge and the single wide pressing for the hinges.
late 63 - 66: 3 pin VW emblem on a plinth (raised circle) and the single wide pressing for the hinges.
67 and later: I dunno _________________ It all works on paper.

Yes!
This is ’58-’60.
’56-57 Hood with only 4 bolts.
This is ’55 hood only (7 months between January-July). It’s just like ’56-’57 hood but with 5 bolts and no triangle.
Late ’53 to the end of ’54 Hood is just like the ’55 but with the triangle.
Mid ’53 and split Hood is just like the ’54 hood but with 7 bolts.

Fantastic. cheers.
So from this I have worked out that the bonnet I was thinking of buying isnt correct as its a 55 bonnet with the 4 tab and 5 bolt holes.
I need to find a 4 tab and 4 bolt for a 1956 Oval. (although doesnt the picture above labelled 56 - 57 4 bolts also show 5 bolts? er confused)
and that the bonnet currently on my car is definately a 61 - 63.
My search continues then....
(oh and I never knew about the triangle for the earlies!) |

Not to confuse an already confusing issue.......but 61's came with four tab hoods as well. Are they the same as the 58-60 configuration?? |

Frank,
I think he was talking about the hood that I have. You listed it as 56-57 4 Bolt, but theres 5 Bolts..
*Which I will be selling, cause I need a correct hood. _________________ Valentine, Ray J Sr.

No they did not stop in early 60. my 61 has the original hood and it is a 4 tab hood.
FYI
check this thread out it gives the chassis number that they stopped the 4 tab hood.

I stand corrected the first 3 months of the 61 production year (end of 1960) did use the 4 tab hood I was confusing the change in the front apron early 60's were a 4 finger front apron and mid 60 started the use of the 3 finger front apron _________________ 53 3 fold rag O.G (sold)

I have a 4 tab which has been dented in the top corner.
A friend has told me these bonnents have a shallower pressing than later bonnets???
I only need to replace the top corner of the skin (not the braces where the hinges mount) but i dont want to source and destroy another 4 tab if I dont need to??? |
