We've got a Jotul 3 at our place in NH, setup as freestanding. It's on the smaller side, but if you run it closed up, and get the air flow mixture right, it can really get cooking!

Too small in my view is better than too big. When they are too big as most outside wood burners are you have to choke them back a lot to control the heat. The result is they run too cold and the ash and creosote buildups are way too high.

The downside of too small is the constant refilling of the stove.

Yep. Realistically ours could fit 3 larger quarter cuts of birch. We mostly use it with it open and the screen in place, simply for the aesthetic of a fireplace. I do enjoy playing with it sometimes to see how hot and complete of a burn I can get going. Random dumb fun with fire. Very Happy

we are still burning wood up here,it's been in the 30*'s up here every morning warming up to the 60*'s by afternoon,,,70's next week the 'weather guessers' are saying Laughing
